Borussia Dortmund have been dealt a twin injury blow as Mats Hummels will not play again in 2013 and Marcel Schmelzer faces a month out.
Dortmund's preparations for Saturday's clash with leaders Bayern Munich, which sees the top two in the Bundesliga face off, are in tatters with the news that coach Jurgen Klopp will be without the defensive duo.
Hummels sustained a heel problem and Schmelzer suffered a torn calf muscle in Germany's 1-0 win over England at Wembley on Tuesday.
Tests have revealed that Hummels has a cracked bone in his foot that will keep him out until the middle of January, while Schmelzer is set for three weeks on the sidelines.
The pair have been virtual ever-presents for Dortmund this season, Hummels starting 10 of the side's 12 league games and Schmelzer appearing in nine of the matches.
Hummels lamented his injury diagnosis on his official Facebook page, as he wrote: "Bad news for me.
"I won't be able to play this year any more so all I can do is support the guys in the next weeks.
"It will be very difficult but I am optimistic we can make it through these games."
Dortmund head into this weekend's top-of-the-table clash trailing Bayern by four points.
