A super-computer that has helped to maintain Edinburgh’s reputation as a centre for engineering, scientific and medical research is to be upgraded this summer to provide enhanced computing power and higher speeds.
When HECToR — High-End Computing Terascale Resources — was installed in a computer suite in Penicuik in 2008 the 1,800 sq ft supercomputer was capable of 63 million million calculations per second, the equivalent power of 12,000 desktop machines. The enhanced installation will double that speed.
