Unidentified cyber-attackers have hacked into the heart of Japan’s political, diplomatic and defence establishment, exposing e-mails and secret documents written by MPs, parliamentary officials and diplomats.
Responding to the news, the US Defence Secretary, Leon Panetta, pressed the Japanese Government to share with other governments information on such cyber-attacks, which are assumed by many Japanese to be the work of the Chinese Government or its agents.
“It is the battlefield of the future,” Mr Panetta said on a visit to Tokyo, “and it’s an important area for all countries to work together in order to develop proper security.
