Fish larvae have a lot to say, finds a new study that may help to explain mysterious sounds heard at night near bodies of water.

The fish larvae sounds, documented in the latest issue of the journal Biology Letters, could easily be confused with ghost-like sounds from movies.

“We observed two types of sounds: short-duration ‘knocks,’ which resembled those produced by adults, as well as longer duration ‘growls,’” wrote lead author Erica Staaterman of the University of Miami and her colleagues.
