Coating is a process by which an essentially dry, a outer layer of polymeric material is applied to the surface of a dosage form in order to get specific benefits. Coating may be applied to a wide range of oral solid dosage form, including tablets, capsules, multiparticle granules and drug crystals.
Basic purpose in tablet coating
Pharmaceutical solid dosage forms include tablets,
pellets, pills, beads, spherules are often
coated for various reasons.
1. To make easier to swallow
2. To Masking taste and unpleasant smell
3. To reducing light sensitivity and atmospheric
oxidation, improving stability
4. To improve the pharmaceutical elegance by use of
special colors
5. To prevent color migration from core
6. To prevent from destruction by gastric acid or gastric enzymes
7. To reduce friction in packaging operation
8. To modify drug release profile
9. To separate incompatible substances
