Title: The charm of smart phones
Post by: Rozina Akter on July 26, 2015, 03:03:11 PM
Four friends plan a gossip session at a quiet venue. At one point they are found engrossed with chatting on social media sites, completely oblivious of their friends present there. At one stage they stand up, say bye to each other and leave the place. This is what smart phones have veritably done with many of us. The cute phones are not at fault for this disturbing turn of things. It's we, the mindless mobile phone users, who are to blame for all this.

For nearly one and half decades, the mobile phone has been an integral part of life in this country. The telecommunication device has eventually turned out to be one of the most essential day-to-day requirements of people. The item virtually sparked a revolution in the world of communication in the early eighties. The first-ever mobile phone was used in the USA in 1984. Bangladesh did not have to wait long for it to be in use at mass level. The phone began witnessing wide-scale commercial use from 1993. By the opening years of the 21st century, the cellular or mobile phone has made spectacular inroads into the country. It brought about a radical change in the way we communicate with each other. The cell phone soon emerged as an icon of modern living. Although it was launched in capital Dhaka and moved later to other urban areas, the wireless phone began overrunning rural consumer bases in no time. The days that followed were that of a triumphal march of the special phone. Shedding the label of the status symbol, the product marvellously proved to be a necessity. Thanks to the competition between local and foreign companies to catch market, product prices and call rates slowly came down. It led to the emergence of a new class of cell phone users, comprising mostly the youths.

With the continued increase in the number of subscribers, days of greater sales boom await the Bangladesh mobile phone market. In the social sector, too, the product users are set to experience easier and cheaper telecommunication.

Lately, the mobile phone is no longer limited to telecommunication only. The new-generation phones are additionally equipped with every conceivable digital gadget. Aptly called smart phones, they offer mind-boggling devices that cover all forms of electronic communication. To many users, a hand-held smart phone these days is virtually a portable mini-computer. It opens before one the literally unlimited world of online. The smart phone offers the services of e-mailing, social networking, website use, audio-visual communication, video songs, movies, TVs and scores of others. The conventional services of text messaging, photography, games, etc., have been upgraded.

Bangladesh youths, both male and female, are going through a spell of sorts cast by the smart phone. No matter what the place is, be it at one's home, the workplace, on transports or at a social gathering, a large section of youths are out there --- browsing their phones. They appear always to be caught in a trance. Verbal exchange and eye contact between family members and friends keep declining. One can reach others or talk to them through the social media. Then why take the trouble of moving physically?  However, smart phones benefits those who acutely miss their near and dear ones who are far from them - particularly, in the overseas.

In spite of the feverish fad set off by smart phones, we cannot but welcome them as a gift from science. Many great inventions were sullied by their abuses. But, finally, they have been able to get rid of the infamy. Smart phones, too, hopefully, will soon reach their days of full glory.
