on 7th December, 2010 CDC has arranged a talk on Self Protection Skill Development in our female students. The event was facilitated by Actor and Social activist Rokeya Prachi. I was there from beginning to the end and found that our female students need more platforms like this where they can talk free, share and have some counseling from seniors( both students and Teachers). As a follow up activity I discussed the reasons of eve-teasing with my students (20th batch) of English dept and was awe-struck to find that boys are of the opinion that unless all the girls cover or take Hijab rape and eve-teasing will not stop.On the other hand, girls think that they have the right to move freely and comfortably if they are decently dressed-up. Hijab is not the only solution. However, the moral rectifications of boys and the controlling of emotion in girls are at present two possible ways to ensure security for girls.
I think, we the teachers can play a vital role in creating awareness among the students.

We should not think girls as female figires. We should think them as individuals having equal rights.

Dear Nahid,
Thank you for the sum up and specially for the follow up activities with students. We all should do this kind of open dicussion wid students. The safety and a security of a woman is not upto her only its completely a social resposibily where everyone needs to play discreet role. Fathers, brothers, husbands, boy friends, classmates all should know how to treat/raise/ behave with a woman and at the same time the female counterpats( me, mothers, sisters, aunts, in laws, female friends) should also know about themselves more. And first of all irrespective of every woman they have to decide, i am quoting Frued in different sense though, " What does a woman want?"I think educating oneself through reflection is a great way of self protection.
University is a good platform to motivate and shape up students positively. We the teachers can play a vital role to equip them with good human qualities.

Dear Toma
You have rightly reflected the exact feelings of all of us. Yes, we can frequently have an open discussion with the students to create a sense of awareness regarding 'Self protection'.
Thanks.

I think hijab is not the solution, but the thing is girls should not expose rather ware a descent dress . and the most important thing is boys should change their behavior to the girls.

I strongly agree with Nahid apu because at the advancement of technology and time, girls of 21st century, fall in more problems what they were not victim-ed before. I mean with the advancement of technology girls become much more victim virtually, physically, mentally and emotionally. So it requires much more time, counseling, encouragement, nourishment to our girl children. We should let them knew the way of survival with utmost courage, honor and strength.

There has been contrasting school of thoughts about incidents of eve teasing. Some traditionalists blame it on females saying they provoke the culprits by wearing suggestive dresses. They recommend old-fashioned dresses for women. However, going by the records; it is hard to prove that conservatively dressed women have not gone through eve teasing. School girls, college going students, working women etc regularly go through humiliating comments by the unruly men. Eve teasing can leave a permanent psychological scar on women.
The structure of our society has always been male dominated. But in the modern era, women tried to break the centuries of shackles by venturing into male dominated areas. Last century witnessed number of initiatives and path breaking steps taken by the females. Today, women stand head to head with males when it comes to performance and equality. However, with wave of women empowerment came new set of problems. When the women started to venture on their own without male escorts, they made themselves vulnerable to public glares.
Eve teasing is a menace that has grown to alarming proportions. Not many cities are considered safe for women, we have to ensure the safety of working women and students. Eve teasing is a huge issue in many places. It depicts incidents of public sexual harassment, street harassment or molestation of women by men. These disturbing incidents usually take place in public transport, streets, offices and public places and sometimes in educational organization.
One study shows that 35 percent of the eve teasers are anti-socials, 32 percent are students and 33 percent of eve teasers belong to middle age. Large numbers of females in metropolitan cities are carrying deterrents to protect themselves. Many others are taking self-defence classes. Though the judiciary and government are taking stringent actions against eve teasers but statistics do not show any real improvement.
In last year it has become a night mere especially when we focus on the incidents occured realting to eve teasing.so far I can recall on Kurbani Eid 's morning ( 17th Nov 1020 may be) one maternal grand father was killed when he protested against eve teasing which was going on with his grand daughter. On which edge we BD ppl are living?
