Demerits of protection/ argument against protection:
1. Against the consumer interest.
2. Increases price and reduces variety and choice.
3. Protection makes producers and sellers less quality conscious.
4. Encourages domestic monopoly.
5. Even inefficient firms may feel secure under competition and it discourages innovation.
6. It reduces the volume of foreign trade.
7. Protection leads to uneconomic utilization of worlds of resources.
8. Protection leaves the arena open to corruptions.
9. Leads to conflict internationally.
