Title: who is a teacher?
Post by: shibli on July 31, 2009, 01:23:05 PM
Teaching means spreading knowledge and information. One can only teach well if s/he comes down to the student's level. His/her faculties of observation must be very keen. s/he must be able to judge their mind. Very rarely do the students admit that they don't understand. From their body language and from their eyes the teacher has to judge. A person with too systematic and theoretical an attitude can be an officer but cannot be a teacher.

A teacher needs to have all the positive traits available:  patient, kind, loving, caring, honest, real, down to earth, friendly, calm, alert, smart, etc, because she / he has a lot of responsibilities to take care of and must be able to adapt to different personalities and situations around his / her.

Title: Forum is for sharing ideas and developing ourselves
Post by: shibli on April 20, 2010, 01:42:09 PM
Only 10 to 15 teachers are writing in this forum where the number of teachers in our university is more than 100.  It means that we could not make the forum popular among the teachers and we people hardly follow instructions. Even after the instruction of respected Chairperson sir, we are writing and writing the daily common tasks repeatedly in the job tracking.

Everybody knows that a teacher of DIU has to take 2 to 3 classes each day, he or she has to check scripts and invigilate in the exam halls and take preparation for the classes.  More importantly, a teacher is to counsel a lot of students everyday.

However, in job tracking we should write how we can add value to DIU by contributing more in extra curricular activities and doing something extra. For example, Dr Binoy Barman is writing in the Daily Star, Mr. Masum Iqbal is trying to enroll students and Mr. Raju is trying heart and soul to develop our students and to increase the brand image of DIU.

Are you doing something different and extra for our beloved university?

Many of our students don't know proper etiquette, behavior and conduct towards teachers and the society as a whole. Also, the level of the students' abilities and skills is very poor. Some of them are just studying for the sake of achieving degrees. It is our responsibility to groom them up and teach the importance of education and life skills. Most importantly, we should motivate them and instruct them how to be good human beings.

Three. Good teaching is about listening, questioning, being responsive, and remembering that each student and class is different. It's about eliciting responses and developing the oral communication skills of the quiet students. It's about pushing students to excel; at the same time, it's about being human, respecting others, and being professional at all times. (To be continued)
Title: How to cope with difficult students
Post by: shibli on April 22, 2010, 11:28:22 AM
Dear all

Can you please suggest me on how i can cope with the stress dealing with difficult students?

Case 1:  Yesterday a student came to me and wanted to sit for mid-term improvement exam without payment whereas the date of improvement has already been over and it's been one month since mid-term was finished. It is to be noted that he missed his mid-term examination without any valid reason.

Case 2: The other day I got an email from an unknown id. saying that I am biased to some students. And for that matter, he or she wants to beat me........

Case 3: I was taking an open book exam and one student requested me to find her the answer from the book. And, she was persuasively arguing that i should help her.

Case 4: I took a quiz and just after completion of it, some students came to me and said that they couldn't attend it due to traffic jam and they were ready to sit for it then and there. They wished to take the quiz sitting in my room if i would allow them.

Case 5: Some good students complained that i am too slow for them because i repeat a lesson to make it understandable to the students again and again while some weak students complained to me why i force them to speak English where no other teacher compels them to do so.

Considering the above situations, please give me some suggestions so that i can get over my frustration and get some ideas from you to instruct my students that benefit them the best way.

Dear Shibli Sir: I can share my opinion with you to solve these in the following ways:

For case 1: You can take another midterm exam by completing all official formalities.
For case 2: You can ask to your current semester students for this reason and also ask them to be specific matters.
For case 3: You can say no question will be allowed after given the question for open book exam, except question.
For case 4: If you have enough time to take the special quiz, you can allow them by giving new question.
For case 5: After taking 3 classes you will be able to know their qualities, then take the classes according to your experience.

I always believe in the idea that teachers should make learning enjoyable and fun for the students. Why?Huh?

First let us take the psychological component of a student. A student will be more receptive, to anything including studies, if the subject matter is presented in an interesting and enjoyable manner. If not there is every likelihood that the student will be unwilling or will reject the matter presented as s/he considers studying a burden on him/her.

My second point is that the present day student faces tremendous amount of distraction such as interesting television programmes, drugs, distractions from opposite sexes and many more. To get the student away from all these and to get him interested in studies there is obviously no other way than to make learning interesting.

The present day students are also pressured with tremendous amount of competition from other students. With this mounting pressure on them coupled with the huge expectation of the parents, it will lighten the burden on the young students with a more acceptable form of presentation that is in an enjoyable and fun manner.

Retention is another factor that should be considered important. Any presentation which is given an interesting or enjoyable manner can be retained well by the students. If the subject matter presented is uninteresting then there is strong likelihood the student will forget the subject matter presented in days or even hours.

When presenting a subject the teacher should create a desire amongst the student to crave for knowledge on the subject and this can certainly be obtained if the subject matter is presented in a fun and enjoyable manner.

It can also be said that the present day communication system is so advanced and these are ample teaching aids and techniques to make teaching fun and enjoyable. So why not utilize the opportunities to the full so that the student at the receiving end can benefit to the full.

Last but not least I wish to say that by making teaching fun and enjoyable the life expectancy of both the students and the teachers can be extended. ha ha ha....Over to the others for comments

Four. Good teaching is about not always having a fixed agenda and being rigid, but being flexible, fluid, experimenting, and having the confidence to react and adjust to changing circumstances. It's about getting only 10 percent of what you wanted to do in a class done and still feeling good. It's about deviating from the course syllabus or lecture schedule easily when there is more and better learning elsewhere. Good teaching is about the creative balance between being an authoritarian dictator on the one hand and a pushover on the other.

Case: 6

I caught some students while cheating in the exam. Now they are giving me threats.

Case: 7

Yesterday a student brought written paper from home and stapled them with the answer script. I caught him re-handed. Now he is asking for pardon to save his life since he is last year student.

Sir, i'm highly appriciating you.

In one of your post there was a proposal for an individual forum in which only faculty members can discuss about some sensitive topics those should neither be read by guests or students nor they can post comment. I think that we should have such a forum where we can share our thoughts to improve ourselves and also students.

Thanking you sir...

A teacher is the one who teaches necessary things and give explanation to those people who don't know how to understand them. He or she is able to transfer his/her knowledge of a particular subject to the disciples.

Students need to feel that there is a future that they can change. A teacher knows how to find out where his or her students are and then give them what they need to do. A teacher has the ability to inspire his or her students...

Dear sir

Yes you are right but one more thing that Teachers are important and make a difference.   The quality of teaching is a crucial factor in promoting effective learning in institutions .  Effective teaching requires individuals who are academically able and who care about the well-being of there students..

A good teacher is like a candle - it consumes itself to light the way for others.
I add one quotes "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime"

Teacher = (Mentor + Guide + Career Developer + Supervisor + Adviser + Instructor + Model + Idol) X Student
Title: Re: who is a teacher?

I add more thing

Teacher =Friend x Student

(Mentor + Guide + Career Developer + Supervisor + Adviser + Instructor + Model + Idol) its all  depends on friend ....
A good friend bring those things ...
You  are just a teacher but not a good friend then (Mentor + Guide + Career Developer + Supervisor + Adviser + Instructor + Model + Idol) those things are not included of student development....

Anyway thanks for your nice post...
