Title: Poor language skill of the Turkish students
Post by: fatema_diu on November 08, 2014, 04:46:54 PM
Today we(dept of Eng. Uttara ) had a meeting with our academic coordinator regarding the weakness of the Turkish students in learning English Literature. We found that, completing a certificate course is not enough for some of them to study this subject. We have decided to suggests some extremely weaker students to offer remedial courses(if they prefer).

Dear madam:

I like to add some points on this issue.

At first, don't make the foreign students feel alienated in the classroom or outside the classroom. We should encourage them to mix with the all students i.e Bangladeshi students so that they can feel comfortable to discuss any topic with their friends. Students learn best from the friends. Most of them are poor in English, no doubt. But this is our challenge  to develop them.

Then we should try our level best to make a easy class lecture for all. We may know a lot on a particular topic. But if a student fails to comprehend, this knowledge  results nothing. So from my point of view, make them understand rather than showing off your mastery.

Next, not only Turkish but also some local students are weak in English. So please try to include them in remedial courses.

'Students helping students'- can be a tool to help the Turkish. They have shown their interest in it.

I really don't know, does the remedial course help them or not? From my point of view they can never be able to acquire the language skill unless they try their best.I totally agree with Shampa Mam, they have to involve more with their fellow classmates. I can give the example of Salman Kayes. He has improved a lot by interacting with others.

I believe not only for the Turkish students but also we can provide such effective remedial courses for our own students who seem to be very weak in forming and understanding the English language.Thank you for sharing ma'am.

I guess Students Helping Students are conducting workshops. I feel if they can offer help on one on one basis, it would be better. One student can provide peer help to the other.
