In early 2017, social media warnings about paracetamol purportedly contaminated with the Machupo virus began circulating.  (Use of the term “paracetamol” is a sign the claim originated outside the United States, as there the drug is called “acetaminophen“).

Machupo (also known as “Bolivian hemorrhagic virus” or “black typhus”) is endemic in north and east Bolivia, and is generally spread through air or food. According to the warnings, new “very white and shiny” P/500 paracetamol has become contaminated with the pathogen, posing a severe risk of infection. These warnings typically appear alone, with no news reports or public health agency releases corroborating their claims.

There is no truth to the warning, and public health officials have released statements confirming that the rumors were just that, and not credible. Indonesia’s Food and Drug Administration counterpart advised that the claim is a hoax:

[Prior to the spread of social media rumors, the agency] never received credible reports that support the claim that the Machupo virus has been found in Paracetamol drug product or other drug products.

Machupo virus itself is known is a type of virus that spread can occur through air, food, or direct contact. Machupo virus can be sourced from the saliva, urine, or feces of infected rodents and become a carrier ( reservoir ) of the virus.

Head POM, Penny K. Lukito said that POM never find things like that rumored, including Machupo virus content in the drug product.
On 8 February 2017, public health officials in Malaysia debunked the rumors as well, reiterating that viruses typically cannot survive the pill-making process:

The Malaysian Health Ministry today shot down rumours circulating on social media that P/500 paracetamol tablets in Malaysia contain the ‘Machupo’ virus.

Malaysia’s Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said, just like most viruses, the Machupo cannot live in dry environments such as in paracetamol tablets.

“The Machupo virus is categorised in the Arenavirus group which could cause haemorrhagic fever. At the moment, the virus can only be found in South America.

“It is spread through the urine or faeces of infected rodents,” he said in a statement today.

Noor Hisham said the ministry had not received any reports regarding paracetamol contamination from authorities in manufacturing countries or any other country so far.
We were unable to locate any credible reports of paracetamol (or acetaminophen) contaminated by Machupo virus or any other.

Health Tips / Headache Treatment: Tips to Cope
« on: April 26, 2017, 04:14:04 PM »
Fortunately, many headaches can be at least partially alleviated without medication, which will help minimize your need for pain relievers and reduce your risk of rebound headaches. Here are some tips for headache relief:

Close your eyes and rest. This is an effective headache treatment for a migraine headache, and can help ease a tension headache as well. Sit in a quiet, dark room with your eyes closed and just relax for a bit. "Patients with migraine instinctively seek out a dark, quiet environment in which they can go to sleep for at least a few hours,” Rozental says. “Sleep frequently diminishes or eliminates the pain."
Massage your neck and temples. Rubbing your neck and temples can improve blood flow and soothe tension headaches.
Warm up your neck Try putting a heating pad or a warm cloth around your neck and the base of your skull to ease tension headaches. If that doesn't help, you can apply an ice pack instead to see if that brings you headache relief.
Relax. Meditate, breathe deeply, and try to visualize a peaceful image. "Various relaxation techniques can significantly help patients who suffer from 'muscle contraction' headaches," says Rozental.
Minimize stress. If you have a bad headache, try to step away from stress, literally. Avoid noisy environments, leave work a little early if you can, or ask your partner to take care of chores or the kids.
Watch what you eat and drink. What you put into your body can have a big impact on your headaches. Rozental advises limiting caffeine and alcohol and avoiding cigarettes. He also says regular meals are important, especially for people who get headaches from low blood sugar. "Do not skip meals, particularly breakfast," he urges.
A headache can certainly put your activities on hold until you're feeling better, but getting the right treatment can help you feel better, faster. Instead of trudging through your day with a headache, take time out to care for yourself. Medications can get your head to stop pounding, but a little relaxation and time for yourself can also help.

Health Tips / 10 Natural Remedies for Sinus Pain
« on: April 26, 2017, 04:02:27 PM »
Most people have experienced sinus pain and pressure at some point in their lives and most recover without any prescribed medications. But there are a number of natural sinus pain remedies that can offer relief, whether your symptoms are due to the common cold, allergies, or a sinus infection (sinusitis).

The sinuses are hollow pockets within the bones surrounding the nose. They produce mucus, which drains into the nose. If your nose is swollen due to inflammation, it can block the sinuses and cause pain, congestion, post-nasal drip, a cough, and tooth or facial pain. Sinusitis can be acute, lasting up to four weeks, usually after a cold, or it can be chronic, lasting for months or even years with or without symptoms. Allergies, nasal problems, and certain conditions, such as cystic fibrosis, can also cause acute and chronic sinusitis, according to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases

Try these 10 natural remedies for sinus pain relief to help break the sinus pain cycle:

Flush your nasal passages. “There is a lot of debate about which sinus pain remedies work and what has been proven, but saline spray and washes like the neti pot are indisputable,” says Spencer C. Payne, MD, an associate professor of otolaryngology – head and neck surgery at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. A saline wash thins mucus and helps flush it out of the nasal passages. “Saline washes have been studied and proven to be effective, and should be the first line of defense against sinusitis,” Dr. Payne says. If you have sinus problems, Payne recommends daily use of a saline solution via the neti pot or other device to keep the sinuses moist, and to double up when you are fighting a cold or allergies.
Try bromelain. Sold as a supplement, bromelain is a protein found in pineapple stems. For years, it's been used by prize fighters to reduce swelling. “Bromelain appears to be beneficial and helps reduce swelling in the nasal passages,” says Robert Graham, MD, MPH, an internist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City and assistant professor at the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine. Just be sure to talk to your doctor first, because bromelain may interact with other medications you’re taking. And be sure to follow exact dosing instructions.
Take a steam. Hot water vapor can help moisten the sinuses. “Sprinkle a few drops of eucalyptus or menthol in the shower and steam up your bathroom,” Dr. Graham suggests. “A hot, steamy shower or bath can also help to loosen up mucus and debris that is stuck inside your nose,” says Sam S. Rizk, MD, a New York City-based ear, nose, and throat doctor and facial plastic surgeon.
Drink up. Staying hydrated helps your body in many ways, including keeping your sinuses moist. Drink water throughout the day, and make sure to steer clear of caffeinated or alcoholic drinks, which can cause dehydration, Graham says. Although recommended fluid intake differs from person to person, an easy guideline is to drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses a day. How can you tell if you are getting enough fluids? “If the color of your urine is clear, you are hydrated,” Graham says.
Spice it up. Spicy foods such as mustard, hot peppers, curry, horseradish, and wasabi may help clear sinuses, Graham says. If you like spice, consider adding some “hot” spices to your meals to open your nasal passages.
Allergy-proof your home. Allergies can make sinus pain worse. The latest guidelines from the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery call for controlling your home environment by getting rid of dust mites, installing an air filter system, using bedding with allergen-barriers, and keeping any pets out of the bedroom to help curb nasal allergies.
Use a humidifier. A humidifier can keep the air moist, but be sure to keep it clean, especially if you have mold allergies, says Satish Govindaraj, MD, an associate professor of otolaryngology and neurosurgery at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. A dirty humidifier can breed mold. And you should only use a humidifier during dry months, not when it’s humid. In addition, keep an eye on the humidity level in the room, Payne adds. “Thirty-five to 50 percent humidity is ideal," he says. "If you start fogging the windows, the humidity level is too high.”
Apply warm compresses. “You can use a warm compress to help keep the nasal tissues moist," Dr. Rizk says. "Or, fill a deep bowl or pot with steaming water and place your face over it with a towel around your head to breathe the steam in.” Just be careful not to burn yourself. You can also follow up the warm compress with a cold compress, which may help relieve sinus pain.
Don’t ask for antibiotics right away. Using antibiotics indiscriminately can lead to antibiotic resistance and the development of superbugs, plus they may not be effective in treating most cases of sinusitis. "Less than two percent of these infections are bacterial," Payne says. "Most are viral and should be treated without antibiotics." So-called "watchful waiting" may be indicated, the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery guidelines state. Your doctor may suggest a seven-day waiting period without antibiotics to see if you get better on your own. In fact, according to a study published in JAMA in 2012, for acute cases of sinusitis, antibiotics did little to reduce symptoms at three days of treatment and only provided small benefits at day seven. Quality of life improved over the 10-day treatment in patients receiving both placebo and the antibiotic.
Know when to see the doctor. “If the sinus pain does not improve with over-the-counter help, your doctor can perform a CT scan of the nose and sinuses to look for anatomical blockages that can be treated surgically, such as a deviated nasal septum or nasal polyps,” Rizk says. If sinus pain lasts for a week or more and you have a fever, you should see an ear, nose and throat specialist, because you may need more aggressive treatment than natural remedies provide.

Health Tips / 5 Ways to Relieve Sinus Pain
« on: April 26, 2017, 03:57:53 PM »
A cold makes it hard to breathe. When your sinuses get blocked, you might hurt too, especially around your forehead, eyes, cheeks, and nose. The pain might get worse when you touch your face or hold your head down.

You don't need a doctor to deal with sinus pain caused by colds. It tends to get better along with your other cold symptoms. Sometimes, though, bacteria in blocked sinuses can lead to an infection known as sinusitis. Sinusitis from a bacterial infection might cause pain longer than the week of a typical cold. Your doctor may give you antibiotics and other medications to help you feel better.

Whether your sinus pain is caused by a cold or a bacterial infection, here's how you can relieve it:

Use a saline nose spray. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to suggest a plain saline spray. Saline mist will ease sinus swelling and help break up the mucus that's clogging your nose. You can use it up to six times a day without worrying about side effects. You can also make your own saline nasal spray. Ask your doctor or pharmacist how, and be sure that the water you use is distilled or has been boiled, not straight from a tap.
Use a humidifier. Stuffy sinuses respond well to moist air. Using a humidifier, especially when you sleep at night, will help keep your sinuses open and relieve the pressure. You can also try sitting in a steamy bathroom after a hot shower or inhaling the steam from a pan of hot (not boiling) water for faster relief.
Apply a warm compress. Ease swelling and throbbing with a warm, wet washcloth across your forehead, eyes, and cheeks.
Use an over-the-counter (OTC) decongestant nose spray. These ease congestion and provide relief, especially early in a cold. You can get them as a nasal spray, liquid, or pill. If you use a decongestant nasal spray, don't use it for more than 3 days. If you use it for longer, it can make your stuffiness worse, not better.
Take OTC pain relievers. Acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or naproxen can relieve sinus pain. But never give a child or teenager aspirin for pain. It can be dangerous.
If you have sinus pain from a cold that isn’t better after 10 days, talk to your doctor. You may need an antibiotic or a different treatment.

Career Advice / How do I build a professional profile?
« on: April 22, 2017, 01:57:17 AM »
Having a professional profile isn't something that just applies to big hitters in the business world; it's something that anyone can achieve.

Whatever sector you're in and whatever role you undertake, you can build up a profile or reputation that reaches out to the people within your industry. Even better, having a professional profile means that head-hunters will come looking for you and you'll be offered opportunities and proposals without having to explain who you are - or what you do.

How to build your profile
When trying to build and develop your profile you should cover both the traditional and the modern methods. Word of mouth, public speaking, magazine articles and face-to-face networking should be supplemented by blogging and online networking to make sure your net is cast as wide as possible.

The first task is to decide on your message. Think about the things that make you unique and what will make you stand out in the eyes of employers. If you want to be seen as an innovator, talk about the developments that will define the future of the industry; if you want to be seen as someone who can bring in money, talk up your past revenue making successes.

Whatever you decide, make sure you message is consistent across all the ways you get your profile out there. Take every opportunity you can to get your name out there. If you see an industry event and think you could offer up some insight, get in touch and ask if you can have a slot. Even five minutes on the bill could be the difference and as you become more confidant and more well known, the longer you'll get to share your views and opinions.

As your experience develops you'll inevitably have new things to shout about, such as industry awards or case studies of your work. Make sure you update all your profiles on a monthly basis so whoever is looking will always see the most relevant and recent information.

Be sure to follow up any contact that is made, even if it's not something you're interested in right now. Part of your professional profile should be based around building a reputation as someone who is approachable, not someone who ignores others.

Getting coverage
Publishing your own ‘news' on a blog is one option, but you'll soon find how hard it is to get your blog established and noticed. It's much easier to send your stories to online and offline publications

The people who put these together are usually crying out for content, especially around deadline day for magazines who might need to fill a column before sending the final copy off to print.

Deciding what you have done that might be considered newsworthy may not be easy, but remember that a positive spin can be put on anything. If you've started a project, finished a project, or have made a significant achievement see what you can use that is relevant.

If you work for a sizeable company then it's likely that your Marketing department are already working on Press releases. Find out from them what the process is and see if you can get your name included alongside a quote with your thoughts on the relevant projects.

Get hold of a copy of all the trade journals from within your sector and read them thoroughly. Picture where your story may be best suited so you can be sure you're targeting the right audience.

Make a name for yourself
No matter whether you are a marketer or a bus driver, an investment banker or a charity worker, you can become a name by doing something:

different
special
new
unusual
groundbreaking
humorous
noteworthy
brave
You can, of course, simply just be massively successful, and let your reputation precede you.

Body Fitness / Give Fat a Chance
« on: April 22, 2017, 01:54:21 AM »
Trimming some fat may eliminate some guilt, but be warned: Buying foods labeled “low-fat,” “non-fat,” or “fat-free” may encourage you to eat up to 50 percent more calories, according to three studies by Cornell University’s Food and Brand Lab. Fat’s not the issue when it comes your weight since most of these foods only have about 15 percent fewer calories than their regular counterparts. Go for the full-fat version and eat less—you probably will naturally since they taste better

25
Body Fitness / Scale Back
« on: April 22, 2017, 01:53:31 AM »
Weighing yourself too often can cause you to obsess over every pound. Penner recommends stepping on the scale or putting on a pair of well-fitting (i.e. not a size too small) pants once a week. “Both can be used as an early warning system for preventing weight gain, and the pants may be a better way to gauge if those workouts are helping you tone up and slim down.”

26
Body Fitness / Prefer Protein
« on: April 22, 2017, 01:52:18 AM »
When you’re at the bar or a party and starving, your options aren’t always the best. But if it’s bruschetta, chips and salsa, or wings, go for the chicken (though nuts would be even better). Protein fills you up faster than carbs do, making it less likely that you’ll overeat, says Christopher Ochner, Ph.D., a research associate at New York Obesity Nutrition Research Center at St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital Center. And since it’ll keep you satiated longer, you won’t be as tempted when your friend orders a brownie sundae or brings out a tray of blondies.

27
Body Fitness / Don’t Get Too App-y
« on: April 22, 2017, 01:50:41 AM »
Downloading that new weight-loss app may not be as beneficial as you think. A study published in American Journal of Preventive Medicine rated the top 30 weight-loss apps using criteria set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Diabetes Prevention Plan, which consists of 20 behavior-based strategies, including willpower control, problem solving, stress reduction, motivation, and relapse prevention. Twenty-eight of the programs offered 25 percent or fewer of these essential tummy-trimming tactics. If you’re into tech, use your apps to log food and share your progress on social networks, but don't rely on either too heavily to make lasting lifestyle changes.

28
Body Fitness / Be True to Yourself
« on: April 22, 2017, 01:49:25 AM »
When trying to adopt new healthy habits, it's important to work around other long-standing practices that could sabotage your efforts if overlooked. For example, if you are a morning person, working out in the a.m. is likely best, but if you’re a night person, exercise after work, says Tara Stiles, owner of Strala Yoga in New York City. [Tweet at Tara!]“Don't try to become one or the other if it's not natural to you. You're more likely to stick to it if you like the time of day and the whole experience.”

Body Fitness / Reduce with Produce
« on: April 22, 2017, 01:47:47 AM »
Adopting a plant-based diet could help tip the scales in your favor. A five-year study of 71,751 adults published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics found that vegetarians tend to be slimmer than meat-eaters even though both groups eat about the same number of calories daily. Researchers say it may be because carnivores consume more fatty acids and fewer weight-loss promoting nutrients, like fiber, than herbivores do. Go green to find out if it works for you

Body Fitness / Put Your Money Where Your Muscle Is
« on: April 22, 2017, 01:46:17 AM »
Although creating financial incentives to lose weight isn't a new idea, now we know cashing in to stay motivated works long-term. In the longest study yet on this topic, Mayo Clinic researchers weighed 100 people monthly for one year, offering half the group $20 per pound lost plus a $20 penalty for every pound gained. Those in the monetary group dropped an average of nine pounds by the end of the year, while non-paid participants shed about two pounds. If you’re ready to gamble away weight, consider sites such as Healthywage, FatBet, or stickK.
