[Abraham Maslow's "Need Hierarchy Theory"]

Today i was surfing the internet on motivational books and theories although i am from statistics discipline. For my own motivational purpose i was searching the web and  found this small interesting motivational theory and thought it is worth sharing.


Abraham Maslow's "Need Hierarchy Theory"
One of the most widely mentioned theories of motivation is the hierarchy of needs theory put forth by psychologist Abraham Maslow. Maslow saw human needs in the form of a hierarchy, ascending from the lowest to the highest, and he concluded that when one set of needs is satisfied, this kind of need ceases to be a motivator.

As per his theory the needs are :

(i) Physiological needs :
These are important needs for sustaining the human life. Food, water, warmth, shelter, sleep, medicine and education are the basic physiological needs which fall in the primary list of need satisfaction. Maslow was of an opinion that until these needs were satisfied to a degree to maintain life, no other motivating factors can work.

(ii) Security or Safety needs :
These are the needs to be free of physical danger and of the fear of losing a job, property, food or shelter. It also includes protection against any emotional harm.

(iii) Social needs :
Since people are social beings, they need to belong and be accepted by others. People try to satisfy their need for affection, acceptance and friendship.

(iv) Esteem needs :
According to Maslow, once people begin to satisfy their need to belong, they tend to want to be held in esteem both by themselves and by others. This kind of need produces such satisfaction as power, prestige status and self-confidence. It includes both internal esteem factors like self-respect, autonomy and achievements and external esteem factors such as states, recognition and attention.

(v) Need for self-actualization :
Maslow regards this as the highest need in his hierarchy. It is the drive to become what one is capable of becoming, it includes growth, achieving one's potential and self-fulfillment. It is to maximize one's potential and to accomplish something.

ইন্টারনেট সুবিধাবঞ্চিত মানুষকে ইন্টারনেট–সুবিধার আওতায় আনতে নতুন একটি উদ্যোগ নিয়েছে ফেসবুক কর্তৃপক্ষ। এটিকে বলা হচ্ছে 'ওপেন সেলুলার প্ল্যাটফর্ম'। এর আওতায় এমন একটি ডিভাইস তৈরি করা হবে, যার হার্ডওয়্যার ও সফটওয়্যার হবে ওপেন সোর্স বা উন্মুক্ত। যে–কেউ এই প্রযুক্তি ব্যবহার করতে পারবেন।

বিবিসির এক প্রতিবেদনে বলা হয়েছে, ইন্টারনেট সংযোগের সুবিধা বাড়াতে উন্মুক্ত যোগাযোগের প্ল্যাটফর্ম চালু করেছে ফেসবুক। প্রতিষ্ঠানটির প্রধান নির্বাহী মার্ক জাকারবার্গ তাঁর ফেসবুক প্রোফাইলে জুতার বাক্সের সমান একটি যন্ত্রের ছবি শেয়ার করেছেন। এই যন্ত্রটি ওয়্যারলেস নেটওয়ার্ক হিসেবে যেকোনো জায়গায় বসানো যাবে।
জাকারবার্গ বলেন, ওপেন সেলুলার হচ্ছে আরও উন্নত, সহজলভ্য সংযোগ–সুবিধা দিয়ে বিশ্বের সব মানুষকে কাছে আনার পরবর্তী ধাপ।
এর আগে ফেসবুক তাদের এ ধরনের পদক্ষেপের কারণে বিশ্বের কয়েকটি দেশে সমালোচনার শিকার হয়েছে।
বর্তমানে ১৬০ কোটির বেশি ব্যবহারকারী ফেসবুক ব্যবহার করছেন। আরও নতুন ব্যবহারকারী বাড়াতে ফেসবুক–সুবিধা নেই, এমন অঞ্চলে ইন্টারনেট–সুবিধা বাড়ানোর পরিকল্পনা নিয়ে কাজ করছে ফেসবুক। ইতিমধ্যে সৌরশক্তিচালিত ড্রোন থেকে শুরু করে কয়েক ধরনের প্রযুক্তি নিয়ে কাজ করার কথা জানিয়েছে ফেসবুক কর্তৃপক্ষ।
ফেসবুকের নতুন উদ্যোগ সম্পর্কে প্রতিষ্ঠানটির প্রকৌশলী কাশিফ আলী বলেন, প্রচলিত সেলুলার অবকাঠামো তৈরির বিষয়টি ব্যয়বহুল এবং মোবাইল অপারেটরদের জন্য সবখানে তা নির্মাণ করাও কঠিন। ফেসবুকের উদ্যোগে যে ওপেন সেলুলার প্ল্যাটফর্ম তৈরি করা হচ্ছে, তাতে ওপেন সোর্সভিত্তিক হার্ডওয়্যার ও সফটওয়্যার তৈরি করা হবে। এটি টুজি, এলটিই ও ওয়াই-ফাই নেটওয়ার্ক সমর্থন করবে।
ফেসবুকের প্রধান কার্যালয় ক্যালিফোর্নিয়ার মেনলো পার্কে ওপেন সেলুলার হার্ডওয়্যার নিয়ে পরীক্ষা চালিয়ে সফল হওয়ার দাবি করেছে ফেসবুক কর্তৃপক্ষ। এই যন্ত্র ব্যবহার করে বার্তা পাঠানো, ভয়েস কল ও ইন্টারনেট সংযোগ–সুবিধা পাওয়া যায়।
