Women and Gender Studies / Performativity
« on: February 19, 2020, 09:48:16 AM »
As per Judith Butler, 'Gender is a performance'.
According to Simon de Beauvoir, 'One is not born, rather becomes a woman'.

How does culture create a woman? What is the connectivity between gender construction and performance?

Women and Gender Studies / Mushrooms by Sylvia Plath

Overnight, very
Whitely, discreetly,
Very quietly

Our toes, our noses
Take hold on the loam,
Acquire the air.

Nobody sees us,
Stops us, betrays us;
The small grains make room.

Soft fists insist on
Heaving the needles,
The leafy bedding,

Even the paving.
Our hammers, our rams,
Earless and eyeless,

Perfectly voiceless,
Widen the crannies,
Shoulder through holes. We

Diet on water,
On crumbs of shadow,
Bland-mannered, asking

Little or nothing.
So many of us!
So many of us!

We are shelves, we are
Tables, we are meek,
We are edible,

Nudgers and shovers
In spite of ourselves.
Our kind multiplies:

We shall by morning
Inherit the earth.
Our foot's in the door.

Women and Gender Studies / Woman Work - Poem by Maya Angelou
« on: February 19, 2020, 09:40:17 AM »
Let's have a look:
I've got the children to tend
The clothes to mend
The floor to mop
The food to shop
Then the chicken to fry
The baby to dry
I got company to feed
The garden to weed
I've got shirts to press
The tots to dress
The can to be cut
I gotta clean up this hut
Then see about the sick
And the cotton to pick.

Shine on me, sunshine
Rain on me, rain
Fall softly, dewdrops
And cool my brow again.

Storm, blow me from here
With your fiercest wind
Let me float across the sky
'Til I can rest again.

Fall gently, snowflakes
Cover me with white
Cold icy kisses and
Let me rest tonight.

Sun, rain, curving sky
Mountain, oceans, leaf and stone
Star shine, moon glow
You're all that I can call my own.

Women and Gender Studies / Phenomenal Woman BY MAYA ANGELOU
« on: August 08, 2018, 11:35:35 AM »
Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I’m not cute or built to suit a fashion model’s size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I’m telling lies.
I say,
It’s in the reach of my arms,
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please,
And to a man,
The fellows stand or
Fall down on their knees.
Then they swarm around me,
A hive of honey bees.
I say,
It’s the fire in my eyes,
And the flash of my teeth,
The swing in my waist,
And the joy in my feet.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.

Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

Men themselves have wondered
What they see in me.
They try so much
But they can’t touch
My inner mystery.
When I try to show them,
They say they still can’t see.
I say,
It’s in the arch of my back,
The sun of my smile,
The ride of my breasts,
The grace of my style.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

Now you understand
Just why my head’s not bowed.
I don’t shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.
When you see me passing,
It ought to make you proud.
I say,
It’s in the click of my heels,
The bend of my hair,
the palm of my hand,
The need for my care.
’Cause I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

Is it collected or your own?

I don't know whether 'Code Switching' is positive or negative, and I don't like to debate on the issue. However, while teaching the students of undergraduate and/or even postgraduate, I sometimes feel to switch from Target Language to Mother Tongue. Sometimes, I find my students' faces are dark and blank, and I understand that I fail to communicate them properly through TL.Hence, in the very moment, I switch my language to make them understand the topic I am discussing. No doubt, I have found this type of code switching works effectively for my students to comprehend the text and to connect the text with relevant context(s).

Disclaimer: It can be my limitation of language skills, or my approach to teaching. So, I don't want to emphasise on anything related to code switching let alone taking part in the debate.

When one can connet text(s) with context(s), one  learn something effectively, and the logevity of this learning becomes eternal.

Yes, the question is not silly one.

It would be better if I knew the issue earlier.

English / "Aunt Jennifer's Tigers" by Adrienne Rich
« on: May 23, 2017, 09:35:43 AM »
Aunt Jennifer's tigers prance across a screen,
Bright topaz denizens of a world of green.
They do not fear the men beneath the tree;
They pace in sleek chivalric certainty.

Aunt Jennifer's finger fluttering through her wool
Find even the ivory needle hard to pull.
The massive weight of Uncle's wedding band
Sits heavily upon Aunt Jennifer's hand.

When Aunt is dead, her terrified hands will lie
Still ringed with ordeals she was mastered by.
The tigers in the panel that she made
Will go on prancing, proud and unafraid.
