Covering Islam: A Memento of Islam’s Representation in Media and Literature

Representation of Islam in contemporary Western media and literature has categorized Islam under few characteristics like 'fundamentalist', 'terrorist', 'anti-Western' etc. This stereotypical representation creates nothing but distance between the Westerns and the Muslims. To remove the distance we must understand the politics of representation. Edward Said in his book Covering Islam has very nicely portrayed this phenomenon.

a binary opposition is always needed for the westerner to get the meaning, no matter how hard we try to build the bridge; it's never gonna happen!

In our country things are almost the same. You raid people's house. find 'jihadi' books, call them jamati and imprison them. Labeling/tagging is very easy now a days for people in power and real human rights are violated everywhere.
