$786 mln surplus in 3 months
« on: December 15, 2013, 03:15:53 PM »
Country’s current account recorded a $ 786 million surplus in the first quarter (July-Sept) of this financial year – more than double the figure in the previous corresponding period when it was $ 331 million, according to the central bank.

Economist Zaid Bakht thinks exports have played a ‘key role in this comfortable balance of payment’.

“Current account is maintaining a huge surplus despite rise in import expenditure because of the positive trend in the exports,” he told bdnews24.com.

Bakht, Research Director of Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS), said the amount of surplus, amid the current political unrest, was ‘good’ for the country.

The data released by the central bank on Monday shows country’s export posted a 22 percent growth in the July-Sept period over the same period last year.
