Bangladesh selected for Green Award
« on: January 04, 2014, 08:51:31 PM »

Bangladesh’s Ministry of Environment and Forests has been selected for the Global Green Award-2014.

Minister Hasan Mahmud at a press briefing at the Secretariat on Wednesday said the award would be handed over on March 31 in Berlin.

The Paris-based “Otherways Management Association” has nominated the ministry for the award.

The minister said it was recognition of “our outstanding contribution to the sustainable development of environment”.

He said in the last five years the forest cover in the country had been increased to 13.2 percent from 9.5 percent.

They had been able to produce about 120 million saplings in the last year, which he said, never crossed 40 million earlier.

He said the government had amended more than 23 archaic laws and rules related to the environment and forests.

Bangladesh had also been successful in climate diplomacy.

He said Bangladesh could secure memberships of six important committees of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Bangladesh won four international awards in the last five years, the minister said.
