Make your life sweet with sweet potatoes!
« on: June 17, 2012, 07:23:03 PM »
The fiber and potassium in sweet potatoes provides numerous health benefits. In addition, sweet potatoes contain essential nutrients such as beta-carotene, folic acid and vitamins A and C.

Weight Loss

Including sweet potatoes in your diet may promote weight loss. This is because sweet potatoes are a fiber-rich food and, according to the American Heart Association, a high-fiber diet can help you lose weight. Fiber-rich foods may help you lose weight by helping you to feel fuller on fewer calories. The average-sized sweet potato contains about 160 calories. Sweet potatoes and other fiber-rich foods tend to curb your appetite and help you avoid overeating.

Heart Health

Sweet potatoes are a heart-healthy diet food. The potassium in sweet potatoes can protect your heart by lowering your blood pressure, according to the American Heart Association. In addition, the fiber in sweet potatoes may improve your heart's health by reducing your "bad" cholesterol, called low-density lipoprotein cholesterol.

Diabetes Prevention

The high content of fiber in sweet potatoes may reduce your risk of developing type 2 diabetes. According to MayoClinic.com, fiber may keep your blood sugar levels within a healthy range. This is because fiber may slow down your body's absorption of sugars so that your blood glucose levels are less likely to get too high. Even though sweet potatoes are considered a starchy vegetable carbohydrate, they actually have a low-glycemic index. Foods with low glycemic index scores do not have a strong effect on your blood sugar levels.

Digestive Health

Adding sweet potatoes to your diet may improve your digestive health. The fiber in sweet potatoes may normalize your gastrointestinal function. For this reason, sweet potatoes can prevent constipation. The fiber in sweet potatoes may soften the size of your stool, making it easier to pass. In addition, sweet potatoes may alleviate irritable bowel syndrome. This is because fiber tends to absorb liquid so that you are less likely to suffer from loose, watery stool.

So,Try to include sweet potatoes in your daily diet without fear of weight gaining, but its better to take baked sweet potato rather than other options.

Is sweet potato undoubtedly safe for diabetes patients where almost 16% of it is easily convertible carbohydrate?  Is around 4 % dietary fibre sufficient enough to resist the carbohydrate i.e. glucose absorption?

Its quite safe for diabetes people due to its low glycemic index. The glycemic index measures how quickly certain foods release carbohydrates into the body. High-GI foods cause blood sugar levels to spike, while low-GI foods release glucose slowly into the bloodstream. Thats why if a diabetic patient take sweet potato daily in a small amount,it makes him feel full due to its high fiber content and release glucose slowly into blood to control the blood sugar level. But excess should be strictly prohibited.

But GI value for sweet potato is around 70? Is it too low ? Where GI value for carrot is around 55. But sweet potato can be considered as supplement of potato [GI value around 85] for the diabetes patient in this regard.

Sir, here cooking process should be modified. Boiling of sweet potato instead of baking makes it a low GI food,so diabetes patient should prefer the sweet potatoes in boiled form. A boiled sweet potato has a GL of 11, compared to a GL of 42 for a baked sweet potato.(GL=glycemic load)
