Computer Networking Tips (Basic Idea)
« on: July 08, 2012, 03:01:29 PM »
In this article I will attempt to provide with information and computer networking tips for beginners. After reading this you should at least have an idea about what you want and what you need.

So, first of all there is the question that we have to ask. Are you a beginner or an intermediate when it comes to computer networking? If you know a couple of things you should have no problem managing the small network at home. If you are a beginner you will have some problems understanding how everything works, which is why you need computer networking tips. So, here is a list of the things you should know before setting up your very own computer network that you have to manage and maintain yourself:

If you want to connect more than two computers you will need either a switch or a router
The router or switch basically acts like a splitter that allows internet access to all computers that are connected to it using an Ethernet cable
Use the configuration wizard that comes with your router when setting up the network for the first time and remember to only connect one computer at first in order to set the router and to test the functionality
Most routers can be used out of the box without any kind of trouble, unless you are using a PPPoE connection or any other type of connection that requires a password or other personal information in order to function properly. So I suggest plugging the computer in and seeing if that works.
Always make sure that you use security programs such as antivirus and firewalls. They will protect from 99 percent of threats and save you a lot of time and a lot of trouble
If you have a private network that needs no connection to the internet, go for a switch instead of a router
Make sure you use a firewall (hardware) in case of corporate networks
If you have proxy servers, use a L3 switch instead of a router because it will be more flexible
Make use of a WAN optimization device so that you can save the bandwidth
While setting up your computer network, make sure that cabling is proper and the length of the cable is optimal
Buy managed switch if possible if you are not very much experienced in setting up a network
Decide on wired or wireless network based on the requirements
Make security your utmost priority in case of corporate networks
Plan the network beforehand and only implement the computer network after you consult with experts
Never use a hub even if one is available
Buy trusted hardware for your routing, security and switching needs. CISCO, CheckPoint, Juniper etc are trusted brands
Use a DMZ (Demilitarized zone) in case of external access requirements

I also recommend allowing a professional to setup your network if you can’t handle it yourself. Some people are not inclined towards this type of knowledge and it would be a waste of time trying to make it work on your own. You can even ask a friend that has done this before. This way you are also going to learn to do it yourself the next time around.

In the modern world you really only need a couple of computer networking tips if you plan on establishing a network in your home. Most of the times it is straight forward and will require minimum input on your behalf.
