Traffic jam in Dhaka city.
« on: September 24, 2012, 09:56:44 AM »
Dhaka is a mega city. More than twelve million people live here. Day by day the number is increasing and most part of Dhaka is badly affected by the population growth. More than 7 hundred thousand rickshaws ply the city road, but only 75 thousand have legal number. This huge number of rickshaws is creating traffic jam. From time to time attempts are made to reduce the number, but the initiative usually produces no results. The number of rickshaw pullers is huge. Almost there are no roads or street or lane free from traffic jam.

Primary Reasons of Dhaka Traffic Problem:
1) Less roads and unplanned city.
2) Small area and rapid vertical expansion which is against the norms of city planning.
3) Increasingly more people in a small area whic is rapidly increasing vehicular traffic in the limited  city area.
4) Absence of good quality road and mass transportation system.
5) Lack of coordination among city service providing agencies.

Remedial Measures

1) Immediate measures to stop further construction of any building above five floors in central Dhaka ( the area between Buriganga and Turag). Kolkata did it 35 years back . More other cities of the world also have done this.

2) All connected agencies/experts along with expert representatives of all the political parties together should make a plan for better road  and traffic system for Dhaka which the govt should execute in phases. The plan should incorporate short, medium and long term measures and suggest immediate construction of flyovers at major pressure points.

3) Dhaka City Corporations power should be strengthen like a City Government.

4) Indiscriminate parking, growth of slums, roadside shops/vendors etc need to be checked and gradually removed.

5) Basic building codes published in govt gazette, to be circulated and pasted on walls of all Mahallas and Paras with instruction for public to inform DCC and RAJUK as to its violation by anybody . Stern action should be taken on such information/complaints and city dwellers informed of the action taken thereof.

6) Stern action should be taken against those who have already constructed buildings violating RJUK’s building code.

7) Laws to be enacted to discourage/stop  import/purchase of big size( Pajero /BMW/HUMMMER/ vehicles above 18000cc etc) govt and private vehicles other than public transports. This will enable vehicles to occupy less road/parking space and also entail less fuel consumption and consequential less foreign currency expenditure.

8) Introduce  quality mass transportation systems  to discourage use of private transports.

9) Connect Dhaka with nearby towns( like Comill,B Baria, Joydebpur,Gajipur, Mymensingh, keraniganj,Dhamrai etc) by good road and shuttle train systems.

10) Encourage producing mass transports within the country by our own technical experts of BUET and other( BMTF,PROGOTI, Sayedpur Railway Workshop etc) institutions.

11)  Undertake massive family planning scheme.

steps to solve jam:::

1.  appoint some 100% honest traffic officer
2. implement traffic rule
3. make people conscious

if these are done whatever the condition of road there will be no jam.

I think  the government should put a limit in buying private transport. That might help.

I think, Government should take steps to remove the traffic jam from Dhaka City mainly.

Besides, we can use the techniques of Transportation Problem which is a special branch of Operations Research in Mathematics.
By using the transportation and assignment  techniques, we can save our time and also minimize our cost and maximize our satisfactions, but Government must take steps for implementation of the same.
