A combination of anti-HIV drugs has been found to also reduce the risk of recurrent malaria by nearly half among HIV-positive children, according to researchers supported by the National Institutes of Health.

None of us want to experience events like the Camelford water pollution incident in Cornwall, England, in the late eighties, or more recently, the Crestwood, Illinois, water contamination episode in 2009 where accidental pollution of drinking water led to heart-wrenching consequences to consumers, including brain damage, high cancer risk, and even death. In the case of such catastrophes, it is important to have a method to identify and curtail contaminations immediately to minimize impact on the public. A paper published earlier this month in the SIAM Journal on Applied Mathematics considers the identification of contaminants in a water distribution network as an optimal control problem within a networked system.

ScienceDaily (Nov. 2012) — New research is illuminating the emerging field of ethorobotics -- the study of bioinspired robots interacting with animal counterparts. They studied how real-time feedback attracted or repelled live zebrafish. The fish were more attracted to robots with tail motions that mimicked the live fish. The researchers hope that robots eventually may steer live animal or marine groups from danger.

শিশুর নাম কি হবে? জন্মগ্রহণের পরপরই শিশুর নাম রাখা নিয়ে শুরু হয় তোড়জোড়। শিশুর নাম রাখার ক্ষেত্রে অনেকেই এখন পছন্দের প্রযুক্তি পণ্য, প্রযুক্তি শব্দকেই বেছে নিচ্ছেন। সম্প্রতি টেলিগ্রাফ অনলাইন শিশুর নাম হিসেবে ব্যবহূত সেরা দশটি প্রযুক্তি সংশ্লিষ্ট শব্দের তালিকা প্রকাশ করেছে।
শিশুর নামের এ তালিকায় প্রথমে স্থান পেয়েছে ‘অ্যাপল’ শব্দটি। প্রযুক্তিপণ্য নির্মাতা প্রতিষ্ঠান হিসেবেই অ্যাপলের পরিচিতি। তবে গায়িকা ও অভিনেত্রী গিনেথ প্যালট্রো তাঁর মেয়ের নাম রেখেছেন ‘অ্যাপল’। অ্যাপলের তৈরি প্রিয় এমপিথ্রি প্লেয়ারের নাম থেকেই প্যালট্রো তাঁর মেয়ের নাম রেখেছেন অ্যাপল।
সেরা নামের তালিকায় দ্বিতীয় অবস্থানে রয়েছে ‘আর্চি’। আর্চি মূলত সার্চ ইঞ্জিনের নাম। কম্পিউটার নির্মাতা প্রতিষ্ঠান হিসেবে ‘ডেল’ সুপরিচিত। তবে এ ডেল নামটিই এখন অনেক শিশুর নামের ক্ষেত্রেই ব্যবহূত হচ্ছে। সামাজিক যোগাযোগের ওয়েবসাইট ‘ফেসবুক’। তবে ফেসবুক এখন আর কেবল সামাজিক যোগাযোগের ওয়েবসাইটই নয়; আরব বসন্তের পর মিশরের জামাল ইব্রাহিম তাঁর সন্তানের নাম রেখেছেন ‘ফেসবুক’। একই ভাবে ফেসবুক সংশ্লিষ্ট শব্দ ‘লাইক’ এখন অনেক শিশুর নাম হয়ে উঠেছে। ইসরায়েলের এক দম্পতি তাঁদের মেয়ের নাম রেখেছেন লাইক। যুক্তরাজ্যের প্রযুক্তি সংশ্লিষ্ট শব্দ হিসেবে শিশুর নামের তালিকায় আরও স্থান পেয়েছে ‘লিংক’, ‘লারা’, ‘পিক্সেল’, ‘মারিও’ ও ‘হাল’।
এদিকে প্রযুক্তি বিষয়ক ওয়েবসাইট পিসি ম্যাগ জানিয়েছে, ‘পার্ল’, ‘ম্যাক’, ‘রুবি’, ‘লিনাস’, ‘আডা’, ‘এলিস’, ‘জেসন’, ‘পেজ’, ‘পাসকল’ ও ‘পিসি’ নামটিও জনপ্রিয় নাম হতে পারে। নামের ক্ষেত্রে সম্প্রতি জনপ্রিয় আরও একটি প্রযুক্তি শব্দ হচ্ছে- ‘হ্যাসট্যাগ’।
