Export of Bangladeshi readymade garments (RMG) to the Scandinavian countries has annually been increasing at a rate of 30 per cent for the last five years.
Export to the Nordic region, including Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Finland, rose to US$980 million in the last financial year (FY), 2012-13, which was $391 million in the FY09.
The state-run Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) data showed that during the period, Bangladeshi RMG export growth was recorded between 10 and 18 per cent per year, but it was more than 30 per cent in the four Nordic nations.
Denmark contributed the highest of $500 million to Bangladeshi garment export basket in the FY13, followed by Sweden $346.37 million, Norway $95.87 million and Finland $36.36 million.
According to the Bangladesh Garments Manufactures and Exporters Association (BGMEA) Research Cell, a number of brands under Nordic super-chains like Bestseller, IC Company, Kaffe Clothing Company, JNG Company and Kompagnietaf etc are sourcing Bangladeshi HVPs.
Buyers of other regions largely demand pants and shirts from us, but Nordic buyers are interested in various high-value products, like - blazers, trousers, suits and jackets.
