The government has decided to invest Tk 16.58 billion in a project aimed at reforming secondary education.
A meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council, presided over by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, on Tuesday approved 12 projects costing Tk 42.53 billion, including the one aimed at improving secondary education.
The ‘Secondary Education Sector Investment Programme’ will be taken up as part of a ten-year national education policy (Jul, 2013-Dec, 2023).
Improving secondary education management, reshaping textbook contents, infrastructure development, and the introduction of IT-based teaching and learning programmes are the project's main objectives.
The project will also offer scholarships to poor and disadvantaged students.
Training of teachers, trainers and administrators will also be arranged at home and abroad.
The Tk 7.2 billion fund for the project, to be implemented in four years from Jan 2014, will come from the Asian Development Bank.
Among the other approved projects is the introduction of pre-paid electricity meters at Lalbagh, Basabo, Maniknagar, Bongshal, Jurain and Narayanganj East.
This project, for which the government it to provide Tk 31.23 bn, will be implemented between Jul 2013 and Dec 2015.
Planning Commission Member Hedayetullah Al Mamun briefed journalists about the measures.
Finance Minister AMA Muhith, Planning Minister AK Khandker, and Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury were present at the meeting.
