How to dress for an interview?
« on: July 31, 2010, 01:19:55 PM »

Here are some tips on how to dress when you are going for an interview. Remember first impressions matter, so how you look and present yourself will count either for or against you. You might even lose the job if you are dressed very poorly.

Step 1

Determine the image of the company you will be working for and dress accordingly.
For example an upper class accounting firm might have a formal business image whereas a tattoo shop will have a much more casual/funky image

Ways to determine the image of the company:

1. Go and check out the website of the company and determine what the first impression is that the website gives you.
2. Look at the advertisements that they have placed for the job offer, what do they require the person to look like.
3. Look at how their employees are dressed
4. Ask someone that is working for the company about the style of the company

Step 2

Go through your wardrobe to determine whether you have anything suitable to wear. This has to fit in with the company image. Do this a few days before you go to your interview so that you don’t have to do any last minute shopping.
Things to look at:
1. The clothes that you have
2. The accessories that you are planning to wear
3. The shoes you are planning to wear
4. The make-up that you currently own.
If you are a guy, make sure that you have a proper tie and shirt, pants and jacket.
If you don’t have anything proper to wear, then go shopping as soon as you can.

Step 3

A few tips when you are dressing for the interview:
In general remember:
1. LESS IS MORE
2. Never EVER show too much skin, too much skin is when your top fits too tight, your tummy is showing, your showing too much cleavage, your skirt is too short, you’re not wearing a proper bra and it is showing etc.
3. Try and stay away from jeans. For a high-corporate job JEANS are ALWAYS inappropriate. Buy some proper black pants and wear them to the interview. If you are going to a place where jeans is allowed, wear darker jeans, light jeans just look cheap and common when you are going for an interview.
4. CUT DOWN on the accessories, stay away from overly big, overly long and overly bright earrings. More than 2 bangles on an arm is also a no-no. Basic rule: Keep your *bling* at home
5. Make sure everything is ironed, iron it even if it looks ironed to you, just to be sure.
6. Don’t wear overly bright colors, color is fine, but keep it toned down.
7. Guys stay away from ties with Mickey Mouse, or ANY other Disney character on it, try and keep your ties one or two colors maximum.
8. Do NOT wear too much make-up. Stay away from glitter and ladies, now is the time to get some good foundation. (go to your nearest make-up store if you aren’t sure and ask them for some advice)
9. Wear heels (ladies), but make sure that the heels are not too high and avoid boots. You might just give the wrong impression.
10. NEVER EVER wear gym shoes to an interview.
11. Unless you are going for an interview at a tattoo shop. COVER ALL TATTOOS and take out ALL piercings with the exception of your ears.

Step 4

Get a good haircut before hand. Your hair should be in a good condition and overall most companies require that men have shorter hair (especially if you are going to work at an accounting firm).

If you’re hair is in good condition, just make sure that it is clean.
Also get yourself a good deodorant; there is nothing as unattractive as someone with sweat marks on their arms because they are stressing. (In my opinion Mitchum is one that is really strong and will last you through an interview.)
BUT PLEASE stay away from dousing yourself in too much perfume. You don’t want to give the person interviewing you a sinus problem.

Step 5

VERY IMPORTANT.
Make sure that your teeth is cleaned and that they only smell coming from your mouth is a fresh minty one.
White teeth is also a must. Don't worry if you do have braces, just make sure that your teeth is cleaned.
Oh and NEVER EVER chew chewing gum while speaking to someone. It looks HIGHLY unprofessional. It doesn't matter how good you are at chewing it nicely.

Step 6

Last but not least, walk in with confidence. (Don’t throw an attitude, but do look comfortable in your body and your clothes) and remember to be polite and bring out your best manners.
