The government of Bangladesh is purchasing more and more through E-tenders, says the World Bank. It says the number of electronic bids grew to 2,870 in November, 2013 from just 14 in June, 2012.
At the same time, the number of registered bidders for e-procurement grew to 6,676 from 294.
The global lender is helping four government agencies of Bangladesh with e-tendering – Roads and Highways Department, Local Government Engineering Department, Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board, and Bangladesh Water Development Board. These four together account for a major portion of government’s procurement. A World Bank team recently reviewed the status of the project and found the project had made “satisfactory progress” in contributing to improving transparency and competitiveness of the system. The review team highlighted the need for strengthening “Central Procurement Technical Unit” with more skilled staff and further expansion of e-tendering.
