Competition between Professionals

Competition can work in subtle ways, for instance amongst genuine professionals. One of the big gains from getting surgeons to publish their success rates etc. was that this encouraged them to learn from one another, and so good practice and promising new techniques spread much more quickly than in the past. The result was that most surgeons' performance came up to near the standard of the best, and patients did not need to 'exercise choice' even though that was the original headline reason for the publication of the data.

A healthy competition is very desirable at work-place as it keeps working power active which increases creativity and ensures self-development! Just we need to keep this competition as healthy as possible otherwise it will create extra tension!

I think it's best to compete with yourself instead of the co-workers!.. what you were last year, what you are now! Evaluating the loss and gains you can estimate your position. Competing with colleagues only generates professional jealously and makes the workplace unhealthy!

Dear Rafi Sir

True but you know people's mature. They tend to compete with others rather than what you said. I don't see that in a bad way if only it is 'healthy'.

The fact is most often we get into 'unhealthy jealous' competition that 'one did it so I will do' / 'one did these many times/many things', I will do more without judging the need and one's own ability or way of performance and circumstance (s).

I agree with you. That's a better outlook.

Thanks Rabeya apu for bringing such a practical issue here  . And I agree with Rafi sir that we should only compete with our own self, not with any of our co-workers which, I believe, can only destroy our creativity and pollute our friendly work environment.

Dear Rabeya,

Thank you very much for bringing out such a noteworthy issue.So far I observed,the word 'healthy' has been overlooked again and again.It is definitely the best to try to exceed one's own goodness every moment but it will be wonderful if at the same time one can be inspired by the goodness or professionalism of his or her co-workers.I think,the thing one has to maintain here is nothing but silence.The total process has to be evolved silently within the person himself or herself.Then no doubt it will be healthy.

Competition itself is a silent process at professional places unless one does it so vigorously (not to mention nakedly) to make it visible. And then only it becomes 'unhealthy'.
