Dehydration in adults is one of the most common problems in summer. The signs of dehydration in adults can be quite vague as there are various reasons for feeling this way. There are also a handful of dehydration causes in adults which may not have crossed your mind.

For those of you who are unaware, dehydration occurs when there is too much water loss or not enough of water consumed by the individual. In some cases, a combination of the two. In medical terminology, dehydration is nothing but a metabolic state where a less than optimal level of fluid is available to facilitate normal biochemical and physiological processes.

The causes of dehydration are - diarrhoea (where a person loses a lot of fluids when passing bowels frequently), vomiting, sweat (The body can lose significant amounts of water in the form of sweat when it tries to cool itself), diabetes (elevated blood sugar levels cause sugar to spill into the urine and then water follows).

Here are some of the signs of dehydration in adults:

Dry Mouth: There is a decrease amount of production in saliva when you lack the right amount of water in the body. This is the first sign of dehydration in adults. The mouth also begins to burn and the inner lining of the mouth starts to peel.

Muscle Cramps: Muscle cramps is one of the signs of dehydration in adults. Consuming lots of fluids in a day helps in treating dehydration. Weakness Feeling dizzy and weak in the knees is one of the major signs of dehydration in adults. The only treatment for this problem is to make sure you are not getting involved in too much of physical activity (especially during the summer).

Palpitations: The heart begins to beat faster and the breathless feeling is one of the main signs you are dehydrated. The best treatment for this problem is to reduce the amount of work you are doing and drink lots of fluids.

Urine Output: Is Less When you are unable to pass out urine, it is one of the signs that you are dehydrated. Not being able to pass urine and a burning sensation when peeing are some of the common signs of dehydration in adults.

Inability To Sweat: If you are not able to sweat despite putting in more efforts when you work out, play, run and engage in other physical activities, then there is a problem. Dehydration is setting in and only water can help you stay fit and healthy.
