The microbus started for Natore at 10 a.m. Monir Mia and some of his dearest relatives were going to Rumel’s house to inform them about their decision observing the condition of their family as their family invited after the eldest daughter of Monir Mia named Jerin had been chosen by them. At Nandigram, the tire became suddenly flat. Everyone got down from the microbus and they whispered:
"The incident of tire bust was not a good sign at very beginning of this journey."
Monir Mia became dishearten for the unexpected event. Though they got rid of the accident, he was little bit upset as it happened in the very beginning of his daughter’s marriage.
The journey came to the end. They talked with Rumel with whom Jerin was going to be married. Rumel worked as a medical representative in a renounced Pharmaceutical Industry. He looked smart, handsome and well behaved. Rumel told about himself and his job,his desire everything. He told:
“Not only but also have all of my family members never wanted to have dowry from you.We were searching out an educated beautiful girl who can adjust with my family. My father and mother chose Jerin as their daughter in law.”
Other special member of Rumel’s family repeated the same opinion. Monir Mia was highly glad. After finishing the conversation part they took lunch. At the time of drinking water the glass was fallen down from the hand of Monir Mia and broken down. Again Monir Mia was strike. He asked himself:
“Why repeatedly the unwanted things were being happened!”
However both the family exchanged their desire. Monir Mia was a peon of a government bank. He had been suffering for long three years. He was pleased to see the boy. But his heart was hesitating; his mind was thundering. He did not know why?
Lastly Rumel’s family wanted to fix the date of marriage. Monir Mia took 15 days. Returning from Natore Monir Mia consulted with other family members. Some were agreeing and some were not interested considering few negative aspects. Some said:
“We should fix the date in the month of Joistho not in Boishakh, because this month is not recognized for marriage. If it happens it will bring Sorrows in future.”
Both the family members were continuing conversation. But one morning Rumel’s uncle wanted to know from Monir’s wife:
“What will you give our son?”
The lady told: "We would give TV, Freeze and other furniture they used primarily.
Then he wished:  “What about gold? “Gradually they demanded five gram gold. Monir Mia was fired.
He said: “I will not go ahead any longer for this case.”
But Rumel requested him and his father to be agreed with the proposal given by his family. He used to talk with Jerin on cell phone always after choosing her this time he also requested her:
“Please fulfill what parents demand.”
Jerinsaid: “How? It is impossible for my father to carry the heavy load! Please make them understand the reality. Besides you all said that you would take nothing from us.Then why are you feeling so badly?”
At a stage the subject became so difficult. Both the parties objected, protested and lastly they stopped talking. But Jerin who was the student of first year (B.A. Hon’s) became very frustrated. She never loved any boy. She was a very simple girl. She didn’t even talk to any boy about love. But here she liked the boy seeing and talking with him. She was surprised to notice all the things. Especially when she heard from a reliable source that she might have been trapped after being married. She continuously questioned herself:
"Why was this happened to me? Of course I was an unfortunate girl so this thing was happened with me."
Rumel and his family was not really what Jerin’s family thought. The boy was drug-addicted. His father was psycho. In fact they were very greedy. Jerin was very shocked to observe human’s character.
Monirmia did not believe in superstition. But the bust tire and broken glass changed his mental belief. He prayed and showed gratitude to god for blessing them.
But nobody knew Jerin became determined not to accept any other boy in her life.

A few years ago a graduate lady joined a renowned English medium school in a city. Her name is Jayoita. She came from in a poor class family. She was mainly a Teacher of English. The girl was   Handsome and beautiful. That’s why some of her student felt love for her and even proposed their love to her. She avoided those proposals. Among the students Manish was one of them. He read in class 12. He fall in love within a few days after joining in this school. He made a good relationship with her as a student. As he was an weak student, he requested his teacher to teach him in her home as a private tutor. Jayoita agreed him and showed interest to teach him in her home. Manesh started to learn from her going to her home. Thus, some days passed. One day He directly proposed his love to Jayoita.  Jayoita become little surprised at this. Manesh said-
Manesh: Mam, I want to tell an important thing to you today.
Jayoita: Yes, Manesh. But you are looking so serious?
What happened?
Manesh: Actually, I started to like you from your first class.
Jayoita: Is it for my teaching style?
Manesh: No. It is not for that. Actually special feeling has been growing in my mind around you. After a few days I have realized that I have fallen in love for you.
Jayoita: What ?
Manesh: Yes, Jayoita. I’m telling the truth. I love you so much.
Jayoita: But, how is it possible?
Manesh: Everything is possible in the world of love.
Jayoita: Look, Manesh. I am few years older then you. Besides, you are from one of the richest family and look at me. I’m from a poor family.
Manesh: So what? Love is not restricted by any class, race or age.
Jayoita: Our families don’t allow this. Society  can’t allow this relationship. It’s an actual fact.
Manesh: If you are with me, I will manage anything. Anything will not be obstacle for me.
Jayoita: ok, I accept your love. I love you also very much, Manesh.
Thus, the love affair was made between them. Their level of relationship became deeper. Emotional love turned to sexual love. Thus they passed their sweet days. But any one of school could not realize their relationship. After a few days someone disturbed Jayoita by calling her. He often irritated Jayoita by calling her in mobile. Jayoita identified that actually he was her Ex-boy friend. His name was Rajat. She requested him not to disturb her. But he can not stop. Disturbing her. She informed this to Manesh. Manesh spoke to him through mobile. Rajat threaded him through mobile. But Manesh did not care of this. He considered it as a silly matter. In a holiday, they went for a long tour. After a day-long tour they returned Jayoita’s home at 10:00 pm. After returning home they saw the destructive scenery of the house. Everything’s fall down here and there. They observed the distorted picture of, the interior of the house. They become surprised at this. They got a piece of paper where there was writing something. Actually in that writing Rajat  threaded  Manesh. In this writing he told if he tried to advance more in the relation with Jayoita, he (Rajat) would kill him in an time by any means. Jayoita was very pariced and afraid reading the story. She suggested Manesh to break the relationship and to go away for her life. Otherwise he had to loss to his life. Manesh suggested her not to be tensed at this. He (Manesh) was always with her and would stay with her in future. In that night, he decided that he would marry her within a few days. He told her to be mentally prepared for the marriage . He left the house at the night. After two days, in the very early morning Manesh phoned Jayoita and told her an address to attend on the time. Probably he wanted to marry her on the day. Manesh reached at the place on time. But Jayoita did not come yet. He waited and tried on her cell phone. But Jayoita did not received the phone. After a few minutes he got a call from an unknown number. He received the call and heard from an unknown person that Jayoita was in danger in her house. Hearing this he left the place and rushed to her house. In the middle way some young men came in front of them. One of them pressed his mouth with a hander chief and at this Manesh lost his sense. They took  him in a car and left place quickly. Thus, the whole day and evening passed. At night , his parents tried to call him. But his phone was switched off. At midnight, Mr. Bhatia, Manesh’s father got a call heard that his son was kidnapped in morning. Hearning this news they got pan iced  and informed it to police commissioner Mr. Sharma of the police head quarters  of the area. Mr. Bhatia urged him to find his son quickly. In the next morning , he and his subordinates started their investigation. They went to his school and flocked to his classmates and some teachers. On the day, Jayoita was not present in the school. Mr. Sharma wanted to know the reason of her absence. The headmaster of the school told him that she took leave of Absence in advance for some days. Mr. Sharma also went to the house of Manesh and talked to his parents. They collected some primary information’s about the boy and also collected the phone number from which he got the call at last night. Mr. Sharma suspected that the boy might be kidnapped only for money. Mr.Bhatia was one of the richest person of the city. Kidnappers kidnapped the boy knowing his vast property and wealth. Thus some days passed by Mr Sharma again went to his school for his investigation. In that day, Jayoita was present in the school. He asked Jayoita about the boy . at that time , parents of Manesh were present in the school. Jayoita told the actual matter very clearly.
Jayoita: Actually I know the person who kidnapped Manesh.
Mr sharma: Who is he?
Jayoita: My ex boy friend , Rajat kidnapped Manesh. Actually, Manesh loved me. I also loved him. Our relation is built 4 months ago.
Mr Sharma: Who you ensure that Rajat is liable for this?
Jayoita: Actually he threatened me for a few months by calling in phone. He told me to break the relationship. For the last time, we got a paper his writing in my house. In this he threatened Manesh of killing him.
Mr Sharma: That’s right . But do you get any call through phone after kidnapping him?
Jayoita: No, sir.
At that time, Mr. Bhatia got the call of his phone from an unknown number. Actually Rajat phoned him. Rajat told that he kidnapped Manesh. He wanted  50 lack taka for realizing his son. But Manesh added two conditions at this. Money should be brought by Jayoita and it should not be addressed to police.
Manesh told that money should be brought tomorrow. He mentioned the time and location where she would bring the money. Mr. Bhatia told all things to police commissionaire. He didn’t realize why Rajat told Jayoita to bring money. He thought that he must had any purpose to bring her. He easily realized that Jayoita must had something to hide. Jayoita showed her interest at this for realizing Manesh quickly. Mr.Sharma considered her as a part of whole thing. In next morning she took 50 lac taka from Mr. Bhatia and started to go to the address on time from his house. Mr. Sharma engaged some polices of civil dresses to follow. They followed her going in a car. After walking some ways, she was stopped a few young persons who wore masks so that they couldn’t be identified. They took her in a car. The car hadn’t number plate. It rushed from the place very quickly. The car polices couldn’t follow that car. They informed it to the police commissioner. He ordered to set up check post in all the borders of the area so that they couldn’t flee away. At that time, they set up check post and checked all the transports. At that night Jayoita and Rajat were arrested at the time of passing the border of area. At first Jayoita blamed Rajat to kidnap her. But the polices didn’t believed them. They sent them to police office. According to Rajat’s speech, they found out Manesh in a dark house. He was tied with a rope and bamboo. His mouth was closed with a piece of cloth. They realized him and went to police office. Then inspector took them to jail and started to ask the pros and cons of kidnapping. At first they didn’t want to tell original story. That time the police officer forced them to speak out the original story.  Then Jayoita opened her mouth. She told that Manesh  was used as a tool of her financial development. Jayoita confessed  that, she was the main planner of this kidnapping. She made a trap of love in which Manesh fall. She also told that they wanted to lead a luxurious life. That’s why they needed a lot of money. So, she acted as a lover and Rajat associated her time to time for making this plan successful. At last hearing this Manesh realized that he fall in false love. At last, Manesh said to Jayoita that she was the scandal of the nation of teachers.

The name of the village is Rasulpur. Everything of the village is like picture. There is a touch of greenery everywhere. Sometimes it seems like a dream island. There’s a zigzag path which is going through the entrance of the village. Most of the people of the village are living below poverty line. It seems poverty is the constant indicator of their daily life. They are too ambitious but their ambition is only to take some rice and vegetables in their daily meal. Education is like a precious stone for them. Therefore only a few families are interested in it and send their children to school which is more than half miles away from their village.
Ayesha and Rehana are two close friends. Every day they cross more than half miles to reach their school. Likewise other day one day they are going to school. They are gossiping about different matters regarding their schools and their future plan.
Ayesha: Do you know my future plan?
Rehana: Not really. What?
Ayesha: In future I would like to be a doctor of my village. Because I think it’s a noble deed. And it’s my earnest desire to do something for my villagers. At the same time it would help me to gather experience which I can apply to my working zone.
Anyway Ayesha is a young girl about 13 years old. Although she is meritorious but she is little bit unsteady like a sparrow moving from here to there. But she has a soft corner for her villagers and she always wants to involve herself in any social activities. As for this reason she choose herself to be a doctor to serve her villagers.
Hearing Ayesha’s plan Rehana begins to laugh ha ha hi hi. Ayesha can’t understand why she is laughing. She asks her friend why she is laughing like a mad without any reason.
Rehana; Oh Ayesha you talking so ridiculously that I can’t tolerate myself from laughing.
Look Ayesha at your old father and his poor income. Now tell me is it possible in his                    Part to bear your all educational expenses. Moreover in a village like Rasulpur it’s                   quite impossible to take higher education. It seems like day dreaming.
After hearing Rehana’s explanations Ayesha give a slight smile in her face and tells her, ok Rehana I’ll take it as a challenge. Just wait and watch what happen next.
Rehana: Ok let’s see what happen.
Finally the cherished day come in Ayesha’s life. The night before the publication of her JSC result, she can’t sleep at all. The whole night she was wandering from here to there with lots of hopes and desires. The next morning. It’s about 10am. Ayesha is preparing herself for school. When Ayesha reached there she has seen that everyone is dancing and laughing. One of her closest friend Parven comes towards her and give her hug.
Ayesha: what happen Parven?
Parven: don’t you have any idea of your result?
Certainly Ayesha feels little bit scared and she also feels that her whole body is shrinking. She asks Parven in a low voice what is my result?
Parven: you actually don’t know your result at all?
Ayesha: no. Moreover I just come now. Then how could I know my result.
Parven: oh really. Oh my foolish witty friend you got GPA-5 and that is golden.
On hearing this from Parven’s mouth she can’t believe for a single moment. She hastily goes towards the result board and see yes she actually got golden GPA-5.
Ayesha then gives a high jump with great joy and begins to participate in the victory dance along with Parven. Suddenly her eyes have caught her bosom friend Rehana. After seeing her she goes towards her and says to her friend it just a beginning of my success, Rehana. I count it as my first step to fulfill my dream says Ayesha in a loud enthusiastic voice.
Ayesha then happily returns to her house and gives the news to her parents. Her mother became very excited. Mr. Rahim and Mrs. Rahima, parents of Ayesha feels extremely happy.
Mrs Rahima: oh my lovely child you give me such a news which certainly get rid of my all distress and pain.
Mr. Rahim: now its tome to think about marriage. You should also think this matter seriously.
Ayesha: oh dad I want to read more and want to take higher education. Mom please tell mother I am not prepared for marriage right this stage.
Mrs. Rahima: ok later I’ll discuss it with your father. Now you should change your dress honey. Go inside and take some rest too.
A few months later the school organized an award giving ceremony where the meritious students would be honored with prizes and certificates. The chairman is the chief guest of the ceremony. Everyone praises Ayesha for her outstanding result. When Ayesha appears before the stage she faces an embarrassing situation. The chairman holds her hand for a long time when he handed over the certificate to her.
The chairman: Give his hand on Ayesha’s shoulder and says you are the future of my village.
After seeing he made up her mind that he would marry this girl by hook or crook.
A few days later some of the sycophants of the chairman appears before Ayesha’s parents and tell him that he does not need to share crops with the chairman. On hearing this Mr. Rahim was utterly surprised.
Mr. Rahim: Oh Rahima am I dreaming or is it a nightmare?
Mrs. Rahima: I think he may be happy due to your honesty and hardworking. That’s it. So don’t worry dear.
On that following night the chairman was busy in convincing her earlier wives. He gives them new sari, churi, lipstick and Neil polish.  He has three wives named Jomela, Romela and Pamela. He is a man about 55 year’s old. He first moves towards his former wife Jomela.
The chairman: you are looking very pretty but you are looking even prettier if you wear this sari and churi.
Jomela: thanks sir.
The chairman: oh my dear Pamela where have you been. Look what have I brought for you.
Pamela; what’s the matter sir. You behave differently today. Anything happen?
The chairman: oh honey, you are talking ridiculously. Am I not love you?
Pamela: surely. After all you are my only loving husband.
The chairman: give her a hug. Then slightly laugh and says aside obviously something happens.
Today the morning is very shinny. It seems a beam of light is playing hide and seek. Under the Bunyan tree a young boy about 25 years old named Tarun gives the villager different knowledge about health, education, and other necessary issues. He is an orphan boy who lives in a shanty house. The chairman forcedly seized away all his property. He is now involving in a secular society whose main motto is to enlighten the villagers from all kinds of darkness. Even Ayesha who got GPA-5 in her JSC exam is taught by Tarun. But many of the villagers didn’t like her visits to Tarun’s place. But Ayesha didn’t care those and for her Tarun is a source of knowledge for him.
On the other hand Ayesha’s father was reluctant to take her any more higher education. He believes that girls are not taking part in family income. As Ayesha is the eldest one so she should start first among the three. So he decides to find a good boy for Ayesha as soon as possible.
Mr. Rahim; Look Ayesha from today you need not go to school. You should stay at home and help your mother. I have decided to give your marriage as soon as possible. So you should prepare yourself.
On hearing Ayesha begins to cry. Oh my dear Lord what should I do now, tell me. On the other hand one of the chairman sycophant was passing through Ayesha’s house and hear everything. He tells it the chairman and he became very happy. He calls upon Ayesha’s father at his residence and give him the proposal that he wants to marry Ayesha. And I will make you free from all the debts. On hearing this
Mr. Rahim; obviously it’s a good proposal but I need to talk to my wife.
The chairman: ok. I’ll give you two days to think. But you have to give an answer immediately.
Ayesha’s father talking to his wife Mrs. Rahima about Ayesha’s marriage.
Mr. Rahim: oh Rahima I have brought a good news for you.
Mrs.Rahima: what’s dear?
Mr. Rahim: I have found a good proposal for our Ayesha. Do you know who that lucky guy is? He is None other than chairman sahib.
Mrs. Rahima: oh dear what are you talking about. He is much older than Ayesha. He is like her father’s age.
Mr. Rahim: I know that. But age doesn’t matter. Look if Ayesha is the wife of the chairman then We need not think about her. She’ll be happy there. Moreover the chairman make us                     Free from all debts and give the land to me permanently. After that we need not look for anyone mercy. There will be peace and peace.
Mrs. Rahima: ok dear, I agree with you. But in such a way we cannot destroy our Ayesha’s life. Think logically and then answer me is it right for our daughter. Although we can certainly find peace but it’ll be harmful for Ayesha.
Mr. Rahim: oh dear Rahima you’re absolutely right. Thanks for helping me to give the right decision. Don’t tell Ayesha anything about this matter.
Two days later Mr. Rahim appears before the chairman with a slight smiling face. Sir both me and my wife are not agreed with this proposal. Please forgive us.
Mr. Rahim; my wife is strongly against the marriage. You are more like father to her. Then how could it possible.
The chairman: that’s it. Do you know Uncle what are you talking about. You have rejected my proposal. So you have to pay for it uncle. Get lost.
Mr. Rahim left the place in a very anxious way. The chairman send some sycophants to kill Mr.Rahim and try to make a situation that it seems an accident. Ayesha’s mother became very anxious. In the evening she learnt from a neighbor that her husband died due to an accident. She start cry and clearly realized who did this. Some days later the chairman appears before Ayesha’s mother and told him in a very polite voice I think aunt you’ve understand everything very clearly. So I’ll give you second chance. If you deny my proposal then I’ll kill you children.
Mrs. Rahima: (with fear) ok sir I am agree with the proposal.
The chairman tell her don’t talk to Ayesha regarding marriage.
Ayesha’s marriage date has finally fixed. It’s on 10th August. Ayesha can’t take the matter easily that today is her marriage ceremony. And she even does not know or see her husband either. She can’t understand what she’ll do now. If she learn the matter early then she can do something. She can neither commit suicide nor to elope.  Her friends helps her to get prepared. Suddenly Rehana and Parven heard that Ayesha’s hobo husband has already been arrived. They are getting excited to see who that lucky guy is. As soon as they have seen the face of Ayesha’s hobo, they were utterly surprised. It’s none other than the chairman. They felt very sorry for Ayesha. They begin to think how to stop the marriage. Therefore they have decided to go towards Tarun who may help them in this case as he is involved in secular society.
They hastily run towards Tarun’s house but they didn’t find him there. They felt very disappointed. When they are crossing the zigzag path of the village, slightly Rehana’s eye has Caught Tarun at the river side. They then reached the river side and then
Parven: Brother Tarun we have faced such a serious problem. We can’t see no other option           except you. Only you could help us from this problem.
Tarun: please tell me what happen. Only then I can help you.
Rehana: Ayesha’s father has forcedly given her marriage to the old bloody chairman. And the
Most weird thing is that poor Ayesha does not know whom she has been marrying.
Tell me is it right or wrong. Now its your turn to help Ayesha from that demon Chairman who has already married three times.
Tarun; oh dears, don’t worry at all. As long as I am alive, I cannot make that devil chairman to be successful in his dirty desire. You just go to Ayesha’s house. I’ll return there within a few minutes along with the villagers and the member of secular society.
At Ayesha’s house your work is to delay the wedding.
On the other hand when Ayesha learns that she would be the wife of the old chairman, she became senseless. At that time Rehana and parvenu reached Ayesha’s house to console her.
When the Kaji sahib start the wedding rules and laws then her Ayesha’s friend became very worried as neither Tarun nor the Villagers appeared there. Certainly Tarun appeared with villagers.
Tarun: You can’t marry a girl who is about 15 years old. If you do that it would be counted as a crime. Now Kaji Sahib asked the girl’s opinion in this marriage. But Ayesha remain quiet and says nothing.
The chairman: I am not willing to obey your law, little boy.
Tarun: you have to listen to my word otherwise we are persuaded you towards the jail.
After hearing this the chairman became very angry and ordered his sycophants to teach Tarun a good lesion. At that time the villagers raised their voice but the chairman threated them by saying them to cause harm their family. The villagers became afraid and worried about their family. They said Tarun sorry as they can go against the chairman. At that time the chairman felt very happy and told his sycophant to tie Tarun’s hand tightly and imprisoned him in a room. He then told the Kaji to start the marriage process. All became lose their hope.
Certainly a police officer and with his officers arrived there.
Police office: Sir what are you doing. This is against the law.
The chairman: officer, do you have any idea who am I? Do you how powerful am I?
Police officer: No. and I don’t want at all. I asks for the last time whether you stop the marriage or not?
The chairman: no.
Ayesha feels good at that moment. On the other hand her friend rescued Tarun.
Tarun: sir why you are getting late. Arrest this barbarous man along with his sycophants. So finally the police officer arrest the whole gang and left the place.
Tarun:  aunt, do you know that you are going to commit a great blunder.
Mrs. Rahima remain silent.
Tarun: Look aunt, if you give marriage Ayesha at 15 then it would be counted as child marriage which is a serious crime. Moreover it may causes great danger to health of a teeneger girl like Ayesha. As a result you might be arrested.
Mrs. Rahima: Please forgive me, Tarun. she start crying loudly and tells i have something to share with all of you. Ayesha your father did not die due to accident rather its the evil deed of the chairman. She even threaten me to kill my child if i deny his proposal. Tarun,You have saved not only Ayesha’s life but also save me from the evil deed. We are really greatful to you son.
Hearing this Ayesha also begins to cry and tells I have lost the most important things in my life, my poor father. Her friend consoles her.
Tarun: Please, aunt don’t mention this. It is one of my responsibility. If you want to thank someone then give thanks to Rehana and Parven. Otherwise it would not possible on my part to stop the wedding.
Mrs. Rahima; thanks to both of you.
Rehana and Parven give a smile and says after all Ayesha is our best friend. Then how could we fall her into danger.
Mr. Rahima: Ok Ayesha please forgive me..
Ayesha: No mom.Its not your fault at all. And thanks to you all for supporting me.Thanks Tarun vai.
Tarun: Oh, please forget this. You know there is ups and down in our life so is true for good and bad. But in this time we should be brave and calm. We should prepare ourselves to face any kind of adverse situation. Always remember after the nighmare we always have a nice morning. Let’s start a new beginning with new hopes.

Black Hole

Dark night! I am sitting beside my window. Its 2.30 am now. Usually I don’t sit here at this time because I feel bad. This dark view brings a dark scene in my mind - my father quarrels with my mother and beats her every now and then. They had huge wealth but on the other hand their inner minds were so narrow. They always kept busy with themselves. They didn’t have enough time to take care of me and I brought up carelessly on the lap of our home maid. From then I introduced with dark. But I cannot be able to reach so close to dark. It always frightens me. But I’m feeling different tonight. The breeze blows my mind so cheerfully. I am very happy now. But I can’t find any source of my unknown feeling. I take sip of my favorite drink. I thought it will work because I took many of my important decisions after taking this. I don’t feel any disturbance after taking this. It has been with me for long eight years. I chose it to avoid the everyday quarrel between my parents. I never know how much time I am taking to find the source of my happiness. Suddenly my eyes go towards the lady who is lying on my bed. How nicely she lies. I feel attracted whenever I see her. She embraces one of the pillows with her two arms and some of her hairs are lying on her face. it extends her beauty. It has been five years we are together but we didn’t marry. Actually we didn’t get enough time to get marry. Yaba, heroin and other drugs kept me far to marry her. But its not a big deal. We are happy. We love each other and it is the main thing. But I don’t understand why she is looking so tired tonight. May be she is working hard now a days. Sleep soft, beloved.
Suddenly I look over the calendar, I feel extremely happy when I see the date because I have found the source of my happiness. Today we are going to marry. Last night we have taken the decision. How can I forget it so early? What’s wrong with me? It seems I am losing my memory every minute. Although doctors have said that something like that will happen. Tonight I want to see the lady who is lying on our bed. I won’t disturb her. I’ll just see her beauty. She looks as innocent as a new born baby. I am fascinated by her innocence. All pasts are floating in my eyes.
I was then a young man of 20 years. I was surrounded by drugs every day. Before the class, after the class, in music class, with friends I was busy with drugs. Even at home, I secretly took drugs to find peace. My home seemed hell to me. That time these drugs were my closest friends. I was enclosed by the fence called drugs. Those were my only companion. I can’t even see any girl in a amorous way. I fell in love with drugs.
One day I reached home late and found my parents are quarrelling with each other. It would be very normal to me but I was exhausted that day. I was refused from different music companies from releasing a song of me. They called it was a rubbish. What nonsense. They didn’t know about music actually. I insulted them with rough words and left the place angrily. I was so depressed then and I didn’t know what to do. And when I found them quarreling I become so angry and break some of the furnitures and leave home. I decided to leave the place for forever. I didn’t find any peace in my home. I t was getting worse to me. Rather than I was happy with my best friends. The drugs.
After leaving home I took shelter in my friend’s home. Nirob, such a nice boy and very helpful. He was lonely in the city. He had a home of his home in Old Dhaka. His family left Dhaka two years back and permanently settled in USA. He is living here to complete his graduation. After six months he will also fly to his parents.
Thinking about this I thought his home will be safe for me. When I requested him he agreed. From the mid of the year I started living in my friend’s home. I concluded my study because it was not possible for me to continue. I kept myself busy in making jingle of different TV commercial. It was my good luck that my friend gave many opportunities to make jingle of different TVC. By this I earned money for myself. It was enough for me.
It was 14th February of any year I can’t remember. All of our friends decided to celebrate this Valentine’s Day. We went to Sohrawardi Uddyan to celebrate. We sat on the field in a circle. In that moment I saw a foreign girl was making fun with children of slums. It was amazing to see her. I was attracted by her innocence. I don’t remember how long I’ve watched her. I can only say I got my senses when one of my friends shook me. They were so surprised because I had never seen any girl in that way. I couldn’t stop seeing her. For the first time in my life I put down drugs from my hand. I stood and walked slowly towards the girl. Then I saw she was playing merrily with kids.
- Excuse me.
- Yes.
- May I talk to you?
- Sure, why not?
- My name is Himel. And you?
- Nasa
- What?! Nasa! Really, very interesting name.
-Yes I know.
- You are from -
- Actually, I am from Bangladesh.
- Oh really? I was wrong. But you look like a foreigner, I mean, your pronunciations, gesture everything are different.
- I born in Bangladesh but I had been living in England for 15 years.
- Oh. It’s nice to meet you.
- Same here. Okay, I am little busy right now, I will see you later. Take care.
- Yes sure. Take care.
I came back but I visited the same place every day to see her but my luck betrayed me all time. I couldn’t forget her face, she is the first girl who made scratch in my mind. I was so thirsty to meet her. I never stopped to take drugs in that time. Actually it was helpful for me to drag me out from her. But the girl may be made a permanent place in my mind.
It was a rainy day. I woke up from bed 10:00 a.m. I pulled the curtain and the drop of rain touched my face. I felt something sacred in my mind. I got ready and walked through the Sohrawardi Uddyan. It was raining in the field. Some university students were enjoying the rain. But my mind was not ready for enjoying. I was looking for something different. A sacred face.
Suddenly I saw that girl, playing with those kids in a shed. I could not believe my eyes. She was there, my new drug was there. I went to her with slow steps.
- Excuse me
-Yes
- How are you Nasa?
- Sorry. I can’t remember you.
- What? Okay, doesn’t matter.  I can help you, 14t February, Sohrawardi Uddyan, I met you. I was surprised to know you are a Bangladeshi.
- Oh God. I get it. How are you? Your name is...
- Himel. My name is Himel.
- Yes. Himel, how are you now?
- I am fine. Can I talk with you for some time?
- Anything serious?
- No, nothing like that. Can you give me some time of yours?
- Sorry. I can’t. These kids will be unhappy if I leave. Next time hopefully. Please, don’t mind.
- Ok. No problem. You better take my card. I will be very glad if you call me when you free.
- Yes sure. Sorry again for today. Hope meet you soon. Bye
- Bye
I didn’t accept the refusal. It hurt me very much. I never thought she would refuse me like this. But I didn’t lose my heart. I tried almost five times after that day. One day afternoon I got a call from an unknown number.  I was surprised when I hear the heavenly voice.
- Hello.
- Hello. Am I talking with Himel?
- Yes, who?
- I am Nasa.
- Oh my god. Nasa? I can’t believe. How are you?
- Fine. Are you free today evening? I want to meet with you.
- I am absolutely free. Tell me where to come.
- Dingi. I will be waiting for you.
- See you there. Thanks.
Just like that we were getting closer after the meeting. Just like a film.  Conversations, friendship, hang out, propose of my love to her, deny and accept. She did not know that I was an addicted person. Even I tried my best to hide it from her. Because she was a perfect girl, I did not want to mix her up with the dark world.
I was away from home. Sometime I missed my parents, my mother’s kiss on my forehead. But Nasa pulled me out from the sorrow. I was happy with her. In the mean time my friend left Bangladesh to USA and I took the house in rent. After leaving home I created my new heaven in own hand.
My happy days didn’t last for a long run. Somehow she came to know about my addiction. She was thundered of my actions. She didn’t think about this. Then, she left me. My drug left me. It had been 2 months she was away from me. I phoned her many times but she didn’t receive. I stood in front her house but she denies. I wanted to see her, to talk with her. I promised to myself that if she forgives me I will not touch any drug again. But she didn’t forgive and I was swallowed by drugs. Suddenly, one evening she phoned me.
- Hello, where are you?
- In my room, why?
- Stay at your home, I’m coming.
- Why you are coming now?
- Don’t ask any question. I’m coming.
- Okay.
After half an hour she reached my home. She sat in front of me. She was looking exhausted. She said that she left her home for forever and wanted to live with me. I tried to know the reason but she denies to explain. I thought I will go to her home and talk to her parents but she told me to avoid this. I thought for some time. How can I manage with her? But I said to her “I can’t give you all the facilities of your home, do you still want to stay with me?” She said that it won’t be create any problem. I made myself understand that everything will be okay, but my mind didn’t agree with me. I was scared in myself. But I left all on my luck.
Since then we are together. One day I went her home to know the reason of her departure but I was surprised to see the attitude of her parents. They were too rough to Nasa as if she is not their daughter. It was a mystery to me. Then I decided to live with her.  We were happy in the small house. I always kept myself busy with music and she was busy with designing dresses. Actually with the help of her friend she got a small work to design dresses for a boutique shop. By this she earned a good amount of money. We were happy but I could not drag myself out from the drugs. Nasa tried a lot but failed. I promised her many times but I failed to keep my promises. She loves me a lot. Even I tried to avoid drugs for the sake of her love but every time I failed. I became a beast when I didn’t get it. I went out from my home because I was afraid with myself. I cared for Nasa.
Eight  months earlier. I woke up from my bed and found her fainted in the washroom. I took her to the hospital immediately. Doctor came with good news. I am going to be a father! I didn’t understand what I should do. Whether I should laugh or cry. I went slowly to Nasa, stood in front of her. I wanted to hug her and give the good news but I couldn’t. She looked at me as if she is a stone. Her face seemed lifeless today. I went close to her, kissed her forehead and said “you’re pregnant sweetheart”. Her eyes filled with tears but I found that there are some hidden meanings in this tear which are not clear to me.
Last night when we thought about our future, we decided to get marry. Because our child needs an identity.
Today is our wedding. Our child is waiting to see the light of earth. It is peculiar to marry at this moment. But we have nothing to do. I don’t want to bring my child in an illegal way. I am frightened for today. Night is over now, new dawn, new sun for our new life. I wake her up in the morning. She is so tired and troubled. But just some few days more, then we will have our beautiful baby in our lap.
In evening, we have reached to the Kaji Office for marriage. We have called our two friends for witness. But when Nasa is about to say kobul she faints. I can’t understand what to do. I take her on my arms and with the help of my friends we’ve reached to the hospital.
After taking to the hospital doctors started to check her and provided me a horrible news that Nasa is addicted and she needs an emergency operation now. But mother is critical, doctor can’t say anything surely. I agree with the doctors, they bring me a paper where I have to sign. I can’t hold the pen to sign, but I sign with all my strength.
Operation ends after one hour. Doctor says that ‘it’s a boy’. But Nasa is now in more critical position, she is continuously losing her blood. Nurses come to me with my son for few seconds;she will take him to incubator because he is premature. I feel heaven to see him. I just want to share my feelings with his mother, but I find that he is so quite. Suddenly doctors come and say they fail to stop her bleeding, she is in very serious stage now, and she wants to meet me. I rush to my Nasa.  I see she is lying on a white bed with swelled eyes. She is looking more white as she is.  I take her hand in between my hands and say why did you do this. She answered “for you, I wanted to understand the pain of yours by taking this. I left my home for you. I hide my previous reports from you. But believe me I love you very much.” She wants to utter something beyond her extreme pain. “k..k..k” but stopped.  Her hand fails to grip. I look at her. She stops seeing me. She is leaving me. My Nasa leaves me forever. Drugs, which she was taking for me, drag her from me? I just want to go with you. But my son. What about him. He is my only hope now. I rush to my son. He is sleeping in the bed. How innocent he is, just like his mother. My two friends are sitting with horrified faces. I take my son up in my lap very carefully. But I am shocked. He is cold like ice. My friends start weeping.
I feel that earth is diving in front of me. My heart is being snatched from me. I have lost everything of my life. I start laughing. With my dim eyes I see my son, standing before me. Strange, this is not his age to stand! He said ‘I have to leave only because of your sins. You will never be excused’. He left, hearing his words I feel that I’m losing my consciousness.

Run!

20 minutes. 3 kilometres. Can we make it? The question mark is hanging over our head because of us. Because just a crazy thought drove two of us on the long winding road, unplanned, unprepared. I was reflecting on those when once again Sumon poked me.
- Jak! Please do something. I must attend the exam. I have prepared for this exam so hard. Please don’t let me down.
The craziness spurred last night, when I overheard our hosts Nahid vai and Salim vai. I observed how they poked fun out of our fellow candidates forcing them to dance almost stripped. Noup! I couldn’t let my prestige be milk shaken like that.
Sumon! Dear bro- said I in hushed voice- I’m out of this at least for tomorrow.
He sleepily nodded. Then suddenly with bursting eyes even in the dark he whimpered- take me with you!
- Ok. Ok! Keep hush now. We will spend the day outside campus.
- Where?
- Let the fate and eyes decide.
Still then we didn’t even imagine what is waiting for us in the next 26 hours.
December 26, 2004. So cold a morning; actually dawn, we slipped down our beds. Just 3 minutes and we whizzed through the hall gate moderately dressed; didn’t even dare to open my luggage to take out warmer clothes.
10 minutes later, we were at the ‘Prantik Gate’. Just at that time- Huuuushhhh!!! Sumon has released his breath, which he was holding fearing that we might be caught anytime.
- Ahh! Out of the nightmare! Ha Ha Ha!
His body jerked with each Ha. Not to mention I also joined in that Ha Ha thing.
- So where to go?
- Hmm! Let’s go the ‘Smriti Soudha’. Open place, we could make the whole day there.
- Jakirrr! Rickshaw!
- Aye! You are being scary bro! Hop up!
Cring! Cring! Ting Ting Ting
Bro no need to bring
The shadows of the past
Hey ho! Bro! We broke the crust!!
Gleeful we two pushed through the monument’s gate. It’s serene. Almost empty there at the break of a new day. We walked towards the seven bladed monument.
- Sumon! We are here today standing freely. Nobody to shout at us- Halt! Show your ID card. Muslim or non- Muslim!
- Yeah! But our forefathers paid dearly to achieve this freedom. How cruel were those days!
- We had to do that sooner or later. Hey! Heard that opposition has called a Hartal today? Another stagnant day for the country!
Hey ho! We chattered on. The first rays of sun beamed on us through the haze of fog. And that time we felt that the hunger thing is crawling in our stomach.
- What to be done? What to eat?
- Luchi, parata, potato fry, mutton, beef or meat.
- Yo! Sumon! That’s too heavy. Take something light.
- Nope! I strongly stand for my parata and beef.
- Ok! Ok! Chief!!
Stomach full, feeling strength like bull. Literally we locked our temples lightly like those four footed animals and said- what’s next?
Seems to salvage us a ramshackle bus (or should we see murir tin) breaked some paces away. The conductor was shouting- Baipail, Baipail, Baipail! No more bus till noon! Seats vacant! Leaving soon.
We, two of the bipedal bull looked at each other with mischievous eyes- let’s go. No return to Jahangirnagar till evening.
Bhroooot! Bhroooot! Vot Vot! The bus moving forward with such speed, that even an ox cart can overtake it. What we two doing; looking at the passengers around.
- Look! Look at that Helvish Grisley boy! How chweet!! Red shawl, red shoe, red pants, red shirt, Mohican (or chandisila) hair cut, earrings; such a thing. Let’s talk to him.
- Hey bro! You’re looking gorrrgeous!
- Who are you, bro?
We two stunned, took aback hearing his (or her) voice and what an attitude. Unsure we two scratching our heads when the conductor came into rescue- Mama! That is a Hijrha (Third Gender). Talk at your risk.
- Ooooo! We are done!
Baipail came in one hour. It’s about six kilometers from the monument.
- The bus is a concord, I see.
- Ah! What a drive. It’s Pegasus in murir tin form I bet.
- Forget it man! Where should I pee?
- Me too, me too!!
So, we two lightened ourselves of the burden beside a dustbin.
What to do! What to do!
If nothing then booo!
- Walk towards the sun!
- What!
- Aye! Man! Let’s go east to Ashulia; behold! we are coming!!
- But no vehicles!
- Who cares! We have bus number 11.
- What’s that?
I pointed to my two single legs. He understood. So the march is on. We walked, walked, walked. How far is it? I don’t know dear Sam!
‘Ashulia, Ashulia’- came a hauler in rescue (or just to be sandwiched between local passangers).
-Breath long! Breath long! Dear Sumon!
His almost blue face unspeakably says- bro! I’m tired.
- Take rest! The air is cooler on the bridge.
- No!
- What!
- March on! I’m okay!
‘Tongi, Tongi’- again a hauler, a bit vacant. We jumped in for Tongi. 30 minutes, we are on the soil of Dhaka City Corporation. But, who’s gonna stay! Certainly, not us! As soon as we jumped off the hauler, hoped in another bus bound for Gazipur. ETA 1230 hrs.
Sun shining bright on us. We were looking for something. What would that be? Somehow the world seems to fuel our eccentricity.  A bus is bound for Chandra. Once again we are on the move. Is the bus moving forward? No, it seems vigorously taken the task to teach us the math of monkey and the oily bamboo- one step forward, two steps back. In that monkey bus our eyes were caught by a bunch of beauties. Aha! God must have built her by His own hands. How gorgeous she’s looking in the purple dress. Her lush eyes, curls- oh no! Where were we going! Forget that! Let me drench my deserted eyes with this oasis of beauty. She seems to notice me. How can I talk to her? Let me devise some way.
- Jak! Lower your eyes!
- Don’t disturb! I hissed at Sumon.
- What the matter bro! Why are you looking at my sister? My view was blocked by a big macho man gazing at me hard.
- Oh! Nothing! Nothing! I was looking through the window.
- Don’t try to fool me! If you again look at her I’ll……………..
Who was looking where? I’m finding the lacehead of my shoe. Sumon has taken refuge in mending his jacket’s chain. Gosh! He’s gone. But I couldn’t resist myself from furtive glances of that beauty. Yet, remembering the words of the monster I kept at the bay depriving myself!
- Grrrrrr! Unromantic, sadistic, brute fellow! Don’t know how to behave with your future brother-in-law! Reflected I in hushed thought; cursing the cupid for such an uncomely event to meet with my sweetheart!! And with the cursing we somehow reached Chandra.
- Let’s go back to varsity. It’s about two hours drive up to there.
I’m deprived of the vibe
Don’t care about life
But what could I do
Let’s carry on the strife
- I’m going to Modhupur jungle. Today is full moon. Moonlit jungle. Ah! That could heal the brunt of being separated from mine would had been queen.
- Jak! You’re being too much emo.
- I’m not a man without heart, bro!
- Nor am I. Mission Moonlit Modhupur commence.
Agreed, we searched for a vehicle to Modhupur. But it’s Hartal day and no buses. An unloaded truck is bound to Rajshahi and we had company of day labourers willing to go to west of Jamuna. So, it’s a deal. The truck will carry us to at least Alenga, where we could catch a bus to Modhupur.
We were about to embark on the truck, when it suddenly revved forward.
- What the heck!
- We can’t pick you up right her. You’ve to walk about half kilo.
- Okay! We are on.
But the truck driver and helper was making fun at us. Whenever we came close to the truck, it revved forward. We became frantic. Let me once get close to it. Then the helper will see the music. But the truck at last geared forward out of reach. And we found that we are close to Kaliakair- we have made six kilo in the meanwhile!!!
Bit exhausted and hungry we two threw us on a bench before a tea-stall. Having the fuel of bread and banana- our dream of moonlit jungle again sprouted up.
- Bro! I’m going to pee. Wait here.
- Ok! Do it fast.
He went behind the shop down the highway slope. I’m looking aroung. The truck has left us with the labourers. Oh! Gosh! Tempos are on; plying between Mirzapur and Kaliakair. We can go halfway by them. But where’s Sumon?
I came down the slope, he’s not there. Searched almost all the vicinity, but no trace of him. For the first time in the whole day I became really scared. Had he left me? I asked almost all people describing his features. But nobody saw him leaving. No vehicle is plying between Kaliakair to Chandra or further. Then? What happened to him! He’s missing for 45 minutes.
Almost decided to go back on foot when the scum bug called at me- Hey! Sorry! Nature was calling so hard!
Look! The scum bug is flashing his teeth- let’s carry on!
Reminded of the moonlit jungle; pacified I moved on. 45 minutes later, we were at the historical Mirzapur. But no time to drool on the history; moonlit Modhupur jungle is calling us. We managed to get on packed bus towards Alenga, the crossroad of Mymensingh and Jamuna road. Reaching there in due time, we luckily got a bus for Sherpur via Modhupur. Wasting no time, we secured two seats on the engine cover.
Amar gorur garite bou sajiye….. Humming the driver- the jolly man!
- Mama, you’re driving a bus and where your beloved is; poked we.
- Mama, whatever you say; this is my ox cart! And your aunt is in my heart. Going home after 15 days. Amar gorur garite……
- Ha Ha Ha! How long will it take to Modhupur?
- Around one and half.
We two drifted once again in our burning dream. Hired a rickshaw without bargain; I had a feeling that something is waiting there for us.
The tall macho puller quickly took us to Dokhla range; but we persuaded him to go further; far from the tiny crowd amassed at the stalls around the entrance.
Icy cold air punching on our faces; but couldn’t resist us from going deep into. And at last there it is- a clear space through the hazes of jungle, bit off-road; shiny with silvery light of the watchful moon.
-Ah! Tonight cometh the true meaning of life. What a beauty. Can sacrifice entire life for this moment.
I didn’t say a single word; seems something coming up through my throat; what else matter? Why we all have to run and run for all those trivial things. Let’s end everything here.
- Sumon! Did you hear something? I believe someone playing on flute very near.
- But! Nobody’s around; and I don’t think that the macho puller is much of connoisseur of music; let playing the flute in such an enchanting tone.
- Then who is it?
Suddenly we felt that somebody is pulling at our collars.
- Move now! Or we all are finished
- What! You heck! The puller! What happened?
Not bothering to reply he threw on the seats and frantically pulled on the rickshaw. Bewildered and angry I demanded answer- Just answer me what’s happening?
- Don’t ask please! Coming, it’s coming!
What’s coming! I tried to look back. The puller pulling rickshaw so fast pulled me to look forward.
- For God’s sake! Don’t look back! Or it will be with you forever.
He almost flew us to Modhupur bazaar. Even in that cold; he was sweating like ice on the oven.
- Now! You hell! Tell me what happened there? Why you pulled at us?
- Pardon me! But that was coming! I can’t afford to lose our guests to its grasp.
- Who?
- The thing
- Ghost?
- Oh no! No! No! Please don’t call names.
- Holy….! Do you believe in that crap?
- Perhaps! You need to go back to lose your lives! Ask others around here.
I had no intention as hunger was craving inside me. Its 2230 hrs and only a few people around. We belched in some rice cakes. But what about a vehicle to Savar? Over there, a truck is being loaded.
- Where to mama?
- Tangail sadar.
- Can you please give us a lift to Tangail crossroad? We are students of Jahangirnagar varsity; need to get there by morning anyhow.
- Ok! But no room in the cab! You’ve to get on top of the load.
That’ll do. We climbed on top of the tarpaulin. The driver called- please lie down over there.
- Why?
- You may hit the roadside tree branches if seated erect.
We lie down on the tarpaulin and felt that it’s a bit spiky. What’s in there?  A gap in the tarpaulin showed that we are sitting on green bananas. The truck is moving fast on empty road. And we are almost freezed- is it snowing!!
Hey! Uncles; get down! We have reached!
His voice seemed to float from far. I can’t move my limbs. They have become numb. Somehow managed to look at Sumon- same here bro! The driver realizing our numbness came up and pulled us down with the help of his assistant.
He left and we tried to warm us up in the only hotel beside a deserted patrol pump. Handmade bread and hot curries brought some warmth. But inside we were freezing down even more. How to reach Savar? None of the bus or trucks seems interested in picking us up and its 0300 hrs already. How should we attend the exam at 0730??
At last, a bus from Pabna took mercy on us. ETA 0315 hrs.
We two dodged on, as the bus dashed forward to Dhaka.
0530 hrs- Baipayl reached. You’ve to get down here. We will take the Ashulia road.
It’s still dark. Almost no light, empty around.
- Sumon! Use number 11 again. We can make it. We’ve two hours.
We moved on. But with each step we felt that energy is leaving us. But we have nothing to do, except keep moving forward.
The sloppy road leading to Jahangirnagar totally broke us down.
- Sumon! I’m done. My feets can’t take it anymore. I feel they are blistering.
- It’s about 3 kilo to the exam hall. Its 0700 now. We have only 30 minutes left.
- May we can get at least one rickshaw?
But none was there. Ten minutes passed in whiz. Sumon whimpered. 20 minutes, 3 kilometres. Science says man can make a kilometer per six minutes at regular walk speed. That’s for general time, not for us. But we’ve to make it.
- Sumon! No way! We’re going to make it!
- How!!
- Sprint.
His wild eyes swept past once over my face. Ok! Run!!
