Ramadan Duas

Ramadan is the month of fasting for all the Muslims who are followers of Islam. Ramadan is the ninth month of Islamic calendar and is the month of devotion of self to Allah. Muslims believe that duringthis month they must indulge themselves praying to Allah and concentrating less on their daily work schedules. Ramadan involves visiting mosque and praying. The prayers recited by Muslims on the occasion of Ramadan is said to be the Ramadan dua. During Ramadan Muslims have meals twice a day. One meal before the sunrise called suhoor and one meal after the sunset called Iftar.Muslims recite a dua before having their suhoor and Iftar meals.

Dua recited by Muslims the fast begins: Suhoor
Wa bisawmi ghadinn nawaiytu min shahri Ramadan.
I intend to keep the fast for tomorrow in the month of Ramadan.
[abu Dawud]

Dua recited by Muslims when they break the fast: Iftar

Allahumma inni laka sumtu wa bika aamantu [wa 'alayka tawakkaltu] wa 'ala rizq-ika aftarthu

O Allah! I fasted for You and I believe in You [and I put my trust in You] and I break my fast with Your sustenance ["wa 'alayka tawakkaltu" is quoted in some books of knowledge - but not all, hence it is in brackets] [abu Dawud]
dhahabadh-dhama'u wab-tallatil 'uruuqi, wa thabatal arju inshaAllah

The thrist is gone, the veins are moistened and the reward is confirmed, if Allah [Ta'ala] Wills
    [abu Dawud 2:306]

Allaahumma inni as’aluka birahmatika al-lati wasi'at kulli shay’in an taghfira li

O Allah, I ask You by Your mercy which envelopes all things, that You forgive me.
[a du'a that Abdullah ibn Amar (radiAllahu anhu) used to say when breaking his fast - as reported by Ibn abi Mulaykah (radiAllahu anhu)]

Dua recited by Muslims when they break the fast at someone’s home:

Aftara 'indakumus saa'imuna, wa akala ta'aamakumul-abraaru, wasallat 'alaikumul mala'ikat
May those who are fasting break their fast in your home, and may the dutiful and pious eat your food and may the angels send prayers upon you.
[abu Dawud 3:367, ibn Majah 1:556, an Nasa'i]

When does Ramadan begin and end can only be decided once the crescent moon is sighted. Muslims turn towards the Qiblah, raising hands towards the sky and recite the Dua given below:

My Lord and your Lord is Allah, the Lord of the worlds. O Allah for us let this month be a period of peace, faith safety and total submission to Thy will; make us walk apace swiftly to that which Thou likes and approves. O Allah pour out much blessings on us in this month, make available for us its generous good and assistance, and keep us safe from the harm, evil, misfortune and mischief that may try to trap us in this month.

Allahu Akbar. Allahumma ahillahu 'alayna bil-amni wal-imaani, was-salaamati, wal-Islami, wat-tawfeeqi lima tuhibbu Rabbana wa tardha. Rabbuna wa RabbukAllahu

Allah is the Greatest. O Allah bring us the new moon with security and faith, with peace and in Islam, and in harmony with what our Lord Loves and what pleases Him. Our Lord and your Lord is Allah
    [at-Tirmidhi 5:504, ad-Darimi 1:336]

During Ramadan days Muslims apart from reciting the five daily prayers they also recite special Prayer called Taraweeh Prayer also called as the night prayer given below:
Subhana dhil Mulki wal Malakuti, Subhana dhil izzati wal aDhmati wal haybati wal Qudrati, wal kibriyaa'i wal jabaroot Subhanal Malikil hayyil ladhi, la yunaamu wa la yamutu, Subbuhun, Quddusun, Rabbul malaa'ikati war-rooh
    La ilaha illal lahu, nustugfirullahi
nas 'alukul jannati, wa na udhubika min an-naar

Glorified is the Owner of the Kingdom of the earth and the heavens; Glorified is the Possessor of Honour and Magnificence and Awe, and Power and Greatness and Omnipotence
Glorified is the Sovereign, the Living, Who does neither sleep nor die
O all Glorious, All Holy one, Our lord and the Lord of the Angels, And the soul.
There is no God but You, Forgive us, Grant us Paradise, and save us from (hell) fire.
Ramadan importance can be felt among the Muslims for several reasons, as during this month the Holy Quran was revealed. Apart from this Lailatul Qadr, also called as the night of power. Lailatul Qadr is the most special night for all the Muslims who fast. It is believed that Lailatul Qadr night falls during the last 10 days of Ramadan during the odd days like 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th or 29th. But many Muslims believe this night of power to be on 27th as it was originally on that day. The importance of Lailatul Qadr is explained by Allah in Quran as:

    "Surely we have revealed the Qur'an on the Night of Al-Qadr;
    The Night of Al-Qadr is better than a thousand months;
The Angels and the Spirit (Jibrael) Descend in it
by their Lords' permission, with every decree.
Peace it is, until the break of Dawn."
Dua recited by Muslims on the Lailatul Qadr, The night of power:
Allahumma innaka 'affuwwun tuhibbul 'afwa fa'fu 'anni' "
Allah You are The One Who pardons greatly, and loves to pardon, so pardon me.
    [at Tirmidhi]

Those who worship the natural elements enter darkness (Air, Water, Fire, etc.). Those who worship sambhuti sink deeper in darkness. [Yajurveda 40:9]; Sambhuti means created things, for example table, chair, idol, etc.
