Budget implementation a big challenge: SUPRO
« on: June 12, 2016, 04:03:20 PM »
The government needs to improve capacity in the taxation management system, reduce corruption and ensure transparency and accountability to implement the proposed national budget for the fiscal year (FY) 2016-17.

SUPRO (Suhasoner Jonno Procharavizan), a network of local NGOs and civil society organisations in Bangladesh, made the observation on Saturday at a press conference on the proposed budget at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) Auditorium.

SUPRO Chairman Ahmed Swapan Mahmud presided over the press conference while its National Council member Manju Rani Pramanik presented written reaction to the budget.

SUPRO thinks that implementation of the proposed budget is a big challenge. The government needs to chalk out proper plans to implement the budget.

They urged the government to include local government institutions in the implementation process of the budget along with capacity building of the administration.

SUPRO also urged the government to make plans as to how they will attain the targeted 8.0 per cent GDP (gross domestic product) growth. They said the agriculture sector and rural economy might contribute to achieving the target.

They also expressed frustration over allocation for agriculture which was reduced in the FY 2016-17 budget.
