Coal-based courses at 4 varsities
Natural gas is now the country's main source of energy, but in the near future the coal will take the place of main energy instead of natural gas.
The government planned to reduce electricity prices at the consumer level through combined the precious LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) based electricity with relatively low priced coal-fired electricity
New departments on coal-based electricity will be launched in the country's four Engineering Universities in the case of creating skilled human resources in the future. The coal-based electricity production & management and coal mine subjects will be taught in the departments.
These courses are primarily launches in the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET), Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) and Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET).
Discussion continues between Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry and the university authorities to decide the syllabus for the department or course. In this regard, a meeting between ministry officials and four Universities Vice-Chancellors has been organized on September 27, 2016.
Account BenefitIn this regard, the Director General of Think Tank Power Cell of the Power Division Mohammad Hossain said, the government has a plan to produce 60,000MW electricity by the year 2041. Half of the electricity (30,000MW) will be produced from coal. Tomorrow's electricity sector will be coal-based. But our universities do not have any independent course on coal-based electricity. So it is necessary to open new departments.
He said, universities have been requested to open a separate department on coal-based electricity. However, we want to start with the course if it is not possible at the first phase. Later, the separate department will be introduced.
