It's easy to feel helpless.
« on: May 31, 2017, 03:03:26 PM »
When a friend is grieving the loss of a loved one, it's obvious to feel helpless. Sometimes we think we're doing the right thing by trying to cheer them up, pointing out the positives or letting them know that they should try to move on.
Well intentioned as we may be, those efforts tend to put pressure on them and leave them feeling invalidated. Here are some ways to help you support your friend in times of need.
Let go of time expectations.
The  grief-stricken person struggles for longer than expected. If this happens, regardless of how frustrating or frightening it may be for you, let them grieve for however long they need, knowing you won't judge them for it.
 Recognize the stages of grief.
The suffering of a loss goes through the  stages like: denial, bargaining, anger, depression and acceptance. Each one is healthy and necessary. The more familiar you are with these stages, the better equipped you'll be to support your friend. :)

Madam, nice post on how to help console a grief-stricken friend/ relative. The truth is we try to deny our misfortune initially but slowly we come to terms with it. It happens to all people at their fag end of life. It happened to even Tagore, Rabindranath Tagore. Beginning with denial, people ultimately accept the ultimate reality, death
This clarification directly refers to  the five stages of grief propounded by the Swiss psychiatrist Elisabeth Kübler-Ross in her 1969 book On Death and Dying.
However, thank you for bringing the psycho-philosophical analysis on stages of grief and how we should be dealing with it.

Madam, you're most welcome, you know. Tina's response comes from the same reference of Kubler-Ross as well. She forgot to mention it.
