99 names of Allah
« on: August 19, 2011, 12:15:35 AM »
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

The most beautiful names in the world belong to the One True God, Allah.

Many people are unaware that God has 99 names; and each and every name describes His most beautiful attributes. God has ordained for mankind to call and evoke Him by His names.

Prophet Muhammad (May Allah's peace and blessings be sent upon him) said: "To God belongs 99 names, 100 minus 1, anyone who memorizes them will enter Paradise; He (God) is odd (He is the Only One), and He loves odd numbers (such as 99).

Allah! La ilah illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He)! To Him belong the Best Names. (Qu'ran 20:8)

Here is the list of Allah's Beautiful Names and Attributes.
Allah (The Name of God)

Allah is the al-Ism al-A'zam, The Greatest Name, which holds all of the divine and beautiful attributes. Allah is the only One deity that is to be worshipped. He deserves to be the Only One worshipped by His whole creation. He is Allah, Lord of the Worlds.

Allah is the cause of all of existence and He does not resemble any of His creation in any way. The name Allah belongs to only Allah!! Nothing else can in any way assume that they have this name or share it with Him. Stated in this verse of the Qu'ran: "Do you know anyone who is similar to Him?" (Qu'ran 19:65)

The name Allah holds five meanings that indicate the non-resemblance of Allah to anything else that He has created. They are:
He is before the before. He came from eternity and He will always be in eternity. He always was.
He is after the after, Eternal; He will always be.

He is unique, without partner, without resemblance and the cause of all that exists. All is in need of Him and He is in need of nothing. He commands His creations to exist by saying, "Be" and it is.
He is the Creator, bearing no resemblance to the created.

He is self-existent without need of anything.
Allah is perfection. His perfection is infinite and will never diminish. The name Allah holds eight attributes indicating the perfection of Allah.
Allah is Ever-Living
Allah is All-Knowing
Allah is All-Hearing
Allah is All-Seeing
What Allah wills is His
Allah has all power
All that exists and their actions depend on Him.

The word, all that is said and taught belongs to Him.

"Allah! La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), Al Hayyul-Qayyum (the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists). Neither slumber nor sleep overtakes Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is he that can intercede with Him except with His permission? He knows what happens to them (His creatures) in this world, and what will happen to them in the Hereafter. And they will never compass anything of His Knowledge except that which He wills. His Kursi (throne) extends over the heavens and the earth, and He feels no fatigue in guarding and preserving them. And He is the Most High, the Most Great." (This ayat is called Ayat-ul-Kursi.) (Qu'ran 2:255)
Ar-Rahman (The Most Gracious) (The Most Beneficial)

Ar-Rahman is the Most Beneficent, the Most Companionate because He bestows the most grace and compassion upon His creatures.
Ar-Raheem (The Most Merciful)

Ar-Raheem bestows the most mercy on all of this creation. He shows the most mercy on the believers. (The people who believe that He is the only God and the only one worthy of being worshipped.

This attribute stands for Grandeur, Majesty, Omnipotence and Regulation of the affairs of His creation. He is the One who directs all of the affairs to do with creation, command and recompense. The whole of creation belongs to Him, all of it is submissive, owned and in continuous need of Him.

"Say: O Allah! Possessor of the kingdom, You give the kingdom to whom You will, and You take the kingdom from whom You will, and You endue with honor whom You will, and You humiliate whom You will. In Your Hand is the good. Verily, You are Able to do all things." (Qu'ran 3:26)

"Do you know of any who is similar to Him?" (Qu'ran 19:65)
"Then do not set up rivals unto Allah (in worship) while you know (that He Alone has the right to be worshipped.)" (Qu'ran 2:22)

As-Salam (The Source of Peace)

He is the one that bestows peace upon His creatures.
Al-Mu'min (The Guardian of Faith)

He is the One who witnessed for Him that no one is God but Him. He also witnessed for the believers that they are truthful in their belief that no one is God except Him. He is the One Who sent His Messengers and revealed His Books containing signs and clear proofs. Who testified to the truth of His Messengers by enjoining on them every sign and proof that would prove the truth of what they came with.

He is Allah, other than whom none has the right to be worshipped but He, The King, The Holy, The One free from all defects, The Giver of Security, The Watcher over all of His creatures, the All-Mighty, The Compeller, The Supreme. Glory be to Allah! (High is He) above all that they associate as partners with Him." (Qu'ran 59:23)

He has prevented any of His creation from encompassing and grasping Him, He is Omnipotent over everything that is in existence, the whole of creation is subject and indebted to Him and yielding before His greatness.

"Blessed be He in Whose Hand is the dominion, and He is Able to do all things. Who has created death and life that He may test you which of you is best in deed. And He is the All-Mighty, the Oft-Forgiving." (Qu'ran 67:1-2)
Al-Jabbar (The Compeller)

Al-Jabbar is the One that allows nothing to happen in His Dominion (Kingdom) except what He wills. He is the One Who is Compelling over dejected hearts, to the one who is weak and impotent, to the one who resorts to Him and seeks refuge with none but Him.
Al-Mutakabbir (The Majestic)

Al-Mutakabbir is a name and attribute of God that makes it clear that He is clear from having the same attributes as the creatures He has created and He if free from resembling them in any way. He is High above His creatures and so are His attributes. He is free from all evil, defect or deficiency.

Al-Musawwir (The Fashioner)

Al-Musawwir is the One who forms His creatures with differences. He is the ultimate designer of all that exists.
Al-Ghaffar (The Forgiver)

Al-Ghaffar is an attribute of God that shows how forgiving He truly is. He accepts the repentance of His creatures, of whomever He chooses of His servants. He forgives the sins of His slaves time and time again. Allah has promised forgiveness to the one who fulfils its conditions, He said,

"&and verily, I am forgiving to him who repents, believes (in My Oneness, and associates none in worship with Me), does righteous deeds and then remains constant in doing them (till his death)." (Qu'ran 20:82)

"And those who believe in Allah and His Messengers and make no distinction between any of them (Messengers), We shall give them their rewards; and Allah is Ever Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful." (Qu'ran 4:152)
Al-Qahhar (The Subduer)

Al-Qahhar is The Subduer who has divine and perfect power and He is able to do what He pleases. He is the One Whom the whole creation has humbled itself, and submitted before His Grandeur, Power and perfect strength.

"He is the Irresistible (Supreme), over His slaves, and He sends guardians (angels guarding and writing all of one's deeds) over you, until when death approaches one of you, Our messengers (angel of death and his assistants) take his soul, and they never neglect their duty." (Qu'ran 6:61)

"So think not that Allah will fail to keep His Promise to His Messengers. Certainly, Allah is All Mighty, All-Able of Retribution. On the Day when the earth will be changed to another earth and so will be the heavens, and they (all creatures) will appear before Allah, the One, the Irresistible." (Qu'ran 14:47-48)

Al-Wahhab (The Bestower)

He is the One who is Generous in giving plenty and He does not need anything in return. He bestows peace and blessing upon His creation while they do not give Him anything.

"(They say): "Our Lord! Let not our hearts deviate (from the truth) after You have guided us, and grant us mercy from You. Truly, You are the Bestower." (Qu'ran)
Ar-Razzaq (The Provider)

Ar-Razzaq is the Provider for all of His creatures. He provides His creation with food and water from the cloud. He provides shelter, clothing, and other necessities that His creations need in order to live. There is not a creature on the earth except that Allah provides for it. He provides for His servants in two ways by the body and by the hearts. He provides the food and clothing and other necessities for the body and He also provides faith and knowledge for the heart and soul. If we as a human race could see all of the things that are provided to us and other living creatures by Allah than maybe we would have a better understanding of our Lord. (i.e. vegetables, water, meat, fruits, grains)

"Say (O Muhammad Peace Be Upon Him): "Come I will recite what your Lord has prohibited you from: Join not anything in worship with Him; be good and dutiful to your parents; kill not your children because of poverty" - We provide sustenance for you and for them" Come not near Al Fawahish (shameful sins and illegal sexual intercourse) whether committed openly or secretly; and kill not anyone who Allah has forbidden except for a just cause (according to Islamic law); This He has commanded you that you may understand." (Qu'ran 6:151)

"And I (Allah) created not the jinn and mankind except that they may worship Me (Alone). I seek not any provisions from them nor do I ask that they should feed Me. Verily, Allah is the All-Provider, Owner of Power, the Most Strong." (Qu'ran 51:56-58)

Al-Fattah (The Opener)

Al-Fattah is the Opener, the Reliever, The Judge, and the One who opens the worldly and religious matters for His slaves. He is the One who will Judge between all of His servants through His laws of the Sharee'ah, His laws of Decree and His laws of recompense. He opens the eyes of those who are truthful and sincere by His Kindness. He is the One who opens their hearts so that they can know Him, love Him and repent to Him. He opens the doors of mercy and sustenance for His servants and provides them the means of attaining the good of this life and the next.

"Whatever of mercy, Allah may grant to mankind, none can withhold it; and whatever He may withhold, none can grant it thereafter." (Qu'ran 35:2)

"Say: Our Lord will assemble us all together (on the Day of Resurrection), then He will judge between us with truth. And He is the Just Judge, the All-Knower of the true state of affairs." (Qu'ran 34:26)

"He said: My Lord! Verily, my people have belied me. Therefore judge You between me and them, and save me and those of the believers who are with me." (Qu'ran 26:117-118)
Al-Alim (The All-Knowing)

Al-Alim knows everything that is in the Heavens and in the earth. He knows what lies in the breast of mankind and He knows every action and every intention that mankind intends to make. Nothing is absent from His knowledge. His knowledge encompasses all the outward and hidden affairs, the open and secret, all those things that has happened or will happen or is happening. He knows the matters of the whole of creation. There is absolutely nothing hidden from Him.

"Verily Allah, with Him (Alone) is the knowledge of the Hour, He sends down the rain, and knows that which is in the wombs. No person knows what he will earn tomorrow, and no person knows in what land he will die. Verily, Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware." (Qu'ran 31:34)

"O mankind! We have created you from a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that you may know each other. Verily, the most honorable of you in the Sight of Allah is that (believer) who has At-Taqwa (he is one of the rightgeous). Indeed Allah is the All-knower, the All-Aware." (Qu'ran 49:13)
Al-Qabidh (The Constrictor)

Al-Qabidh is the One Who is able to constrict the sustenance for His creatures by His wisdom and expand it with His generosity and mercy.

Al-Baasit (The Expander)

Al-Baasit is the One who is able to expand His generosity if He pleases.

"Who is he that will lend to Allah a goodly loan so that He may multiply it to him many times? And it is Allah Who decreases and increases (your provisions) and unto Him you shall return." (Qu'ran 2:245)

"They made not a just estimate of Allah such as is due to Him. On the Day of Resurrection the whole of the earth will be grasped by His Hand and the heavens will be rolled up in His Right Hand. Glorified be He, High be He above all that they associate as partners with Him!" (Qu'ran 39:67)
Al-Khaafid (The Abaser)

He is the One Who lowers whoever He willed by His Destruction and Who raises whoever He willed by His Endowment.
Ar-Raafi^ (The Exalter)

Ar-Raafi is the One who lowers whoever He wills and raises whoever He wills.
Al-Mu^izz (The Honourer)

Al-Mu^izz gives esteem to whoever He willed, so there is no one who can degrade Him; and He degrades whoever He willed, so there is no one to give Him esteem.
Al-Muthil (The Dishonourer)

He is the Humiliator/Dishonourer who can give esteem or humiliate whoever He wills.

As-Samee^ (The All-Hearing)
As-Samee^ hears everything that is in the Heavens and the earth clearly. His hearing is an Eternal Hearing without an ear, instrument or organ. He hears all sounds and voices, in all of their different languages and all their many and various needs and this is easy to Him.

"So if they believe in the like of that which you believe then they are rightly guided; but if they turn away, then they are only in opposition. So Allah will suffice for you against them. And He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knower." (Qu'ran 2:137)

And Allah judges with truth, while those to whom they invoke besides Him cannot judge anything. Certainly, Allah! He is the All-Hearer, the All-Seer." (Qu'ran 40:20)
Al-Baseer (The All-Seeing)

"Say: Shall I inform you of things far better than those? For the God-fearing there are Gardens (Paradise with flowing rivers) with their Lord, underneath which rivers flow. Therein is their eternal home and pure mates or wives. And Allah will be pleased with them. Allah is the All-Seer of His slaves. (Qu'ran 3:15)

"Neither your relatives nor your children will benefit you on the Day of Resurrection (against Allah). He will judge between you. And Allah is the All-Seer of what you do." (Qu'ran 60:3)
Al-Hakam (The Judge)

Al-Hakam is the only true Judge. He is the Ruler and His judgment is His Word. He is the One Who will judge between Mankind and the Jinn on the day of Resurrection. He judges with justice and fairness for all of His servants. He will not oppress anyone to the extent of an atoms weight, and none will be made to carry the sins of another. No servant will be recompensed in a way that is greater than the magnitude of his sin; he will be given only what he deserves. Not a single person's right will be denied; He is the Just in His regulation and decree.

"Verily, My Lord is upon the Straight Path (the truth)." (Qu'ran 11:56)

Verily, those who recite the Book of Allah (this Qu'ran), and perform the prayers and spend out of that what We have provided for them, secretly and openly, they hope for a (sure) trade-gain that will never perish. "And indeed Iblees (Satan) did prove true his thought about them, and they followed him, all except a group of the true believers (in the Oneness of Allah). And he, (Iblees) had no authority over them- except that We might test him who believes in the Hereafter, from him who is in doubt about it. And your Lord is Al Hafiz over everything." (Qu'ran 34:20-21)

"And as for those who take others and protectors besides Him- Allah is Al-Hafiz over them and you (Muhammad P.B.U.H) are not a disposer of their affairs." (Qu'ran 42:6)
Al-Muqueet (The Maintainer)

"Whoever intercedes for a good cause will have the reward thereof, and whosoever intercedes for an evil cause shall have a share in its burden. And Allah is Ever-Able to do everything." (Qu'ran 4:85)
Al-Haseeb (The Reckoner)

Al-Haseeb is the One Who is All-knowing of His servants and sufficient for those who place their trust in Him. He is the One Who will recompense His servants with good or bad in accordance to His Wisdom and His Knowledge of the smallest and greatest actions that they commit during their life.

"When you are greeted with a greeting, greet in return with what is better than it or at least return it equally. Certainly, Allah is Ever a Careful Account Taker of all things." (Qu'ran 4:86)

"Those who convey the Message of Allah and fear Him and fear none save Allah, And sufficient is Allah as Reckoner. (Qu'ran 33:39)

"Then glorify with praises the Name of your Lord, the Most Great." (Qu'ran 56:74)
Al-Kareem (The Generous One)

Al-Kareem is The Bountiful, The Gracious One who is attributed with extreme Greatness and Power and the Glory of status. His is Generous to His creation by providing them with the things that they need and want. He gives out of His bounty to whomsoever He wills.
Ar-Raqeeb (The Watcher)

Ar-Raqeeb is the One Who sees all that is in the hearts of His creation and He is the One Who charge every soul for what it earns either good or bad. He preserves all that is in creation and regulates it with perfection.

"O Mankind! Be dutiful to your Lord, Who created you from a single person, and from him (Adam) He created his wife [Hawwa(Eve)], and from them both He created many men and women; and fear Allah through Whom you demand (your mutual rights), and (do not cut the relations of) the womb (kinship). Surely Allah is the Ever Watcher over you." (Qu'ran 4:1)
Al-Mujeeb (The Answerer)

Al-Mujeeb is the One Who is the closest to His creation. This closeness means that He is completely aware with respect to His Knowledge, Awareness, Seeing, Witnessing, and Encompassing. When His creation asks Him for something He is the One Who answers their call. He answers the call of His servants who love Him. We cannot comprehend this closeness that Al-Mujeeb has bestowed upon us. He answers the one who calls Him in a time of dire need and those who supplicate to Him asking Him for something.

"And when My slaves ask you (O Muhammad P.B.U.H) concerning Me, then (answer them), I am indeed near (to them by My Knowledge). I respond to the invocations of the supplicant when He calls on Me. So let them obey Me and believe in Me so that they may be led aright." (Qu'ran 2:186)

And to Thamud (people We sent) their brother Saalih. He said "O my people! Worship Allah: you have no other god but Him. He brought you forth from the earth and settled you therein, then ask forgiveness of Him, and turn to Him in repentance. Certainly my Lord is Near, Responsive." (Qu'ran 11:61)
Al-Wasi (The All-Embracing) (The All-Encompassing)

He is the One Who is vast with respect to His Attributes and qualities. None can count His praise as He deserves, rather He is how He has praised Himself. None can encompass Him, because He is the All-Encompassing. There is nothing that is similar to Him or nothing that can have more Grace or Nobility than Him.

"The likeness of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah, is as the likeness of a grain (of corn); it grows seven ears, and each ear has a hundred grains. Allah gives manifold increase to whom He wills. And Allah is the All-Sufficient for His creatures' needs, the All-Knower." (Qu'ran 2:261)

"O you who believe! Whoever from among you turns back from his religion (Islam), Allah will bring about a people whom He will love and they will love Him; humble towards the believers, stern towards the disbelievers, fighting in the Way of Allah and never fear of the blame of the blamers. That is the Grace of Allah which He bestows on whom He Wills. And Allah is the All-Sufficient for His creatures' needs, The All-Knower." (Qu'ran 5:54)
Al-Hakeem (The Wise)

Al-Hakeem is the Most Wise One. He is the One Who holds the highest wisdom and knowledge. He is All-Wise in His creating and commanding, and He has perfected everything that is in existence. He has created everything out of nothing and He has legislated nothing that is vain and of no use. He is the One to Whom belongs everlasting wisdom. He has three areas of ruling which nothing else has a share in: He rules between His servants with respect to His Law, His Decree and His Recompense.

And Who is better in judgment than Allah for a people who have firm Faith?" (Qu'ran 5:50)
