Definition of law
It is also difficult to define law. In the words of Thurman Arnold, “law can never be defined. Though it is not be definable some jurist has given some definition about law on the basis of its nature. Some has given definition on the basis of its sources, some has on the function and some has on the basis of society.
Sir Henry Maine says:
Law is meant two matters: one is the notion of order and two is the notion of force.
Kant:
Law is the sum total of the conditions under which the personal wishes of a man can be combined with the personal wishes of other man in accordance with the general principle of the law of freedom.
Blackstone
Law signifies a rule of action and is applied indiscriminately to all kinds of action.
Austin
Law is the command of sovereign.
Vinogradoff
Law is set of rules imposed and enforced by a society with regard to the distribution and exercise of powers over person and things.
Salmond
Law may be defined as the body of principles recognized and applied by the State in the administration of Justice
